In the area that is now considered northern New York, the Haudenosaunee made great use of companion planting and the Three Sisters were an important part of their diet. Known as the Iroquois by the French and the Six Nations by the British, the Haudenosaunee existed as a matrilineal democratic form of government in North America long before European incursion. The Haudenosaunee considered the Three Sisters to be divine gifts. Some versions of their legends involve the crops personified as three women who separate from each other only to find out that they are stronger together. Hart describes the archeological evidence tracing the practices behind this type of inter or polycropping of corn, beans, and squash. In this book we meet three sisters who are just teenagers when the Nazis start rounding up people to send to concentration camps. Livia is the youngest, just fifteen when she?s sent to the formidable Auschwitz, and is followed by her protective older sister Cibi who is determined to stay together no matter what. Magda goes into hiding with their mother and grandfather, relying on the kindness of neighbours and surviving in the forest to elude capture.

How do you think the sisters’ experiences affected the relationships they formed after the Holocaust? In 1991, sisters Vanessa Redgrave (Olga) and Lynn Redgrave (Masha) made their first and only appearance together onstage in this, with niece Jemma Redgrave as Irina at the Queen's Theatre, London. Why do you think the sisters chose to leave their home in Slovakia after the war and embark on a journey to Israel? Do you think they would have done this had it not been for their experiences in the Holocaust?Anfisa – An elderly family retainer and former nurse, Anfisa is 81 years old and has worked forever for the Prozorov family. Natasha begins to despise her for her feebleness and threatens to throw her out but Olga rescues her, taking her to live at Olga's teacher's flat.

Alexei Petrovich Fedotik – A sub-lieutenant, Fedotik hangs around the house buying many gifts for the family. He also is an amateur photographer, and takes photos of the group. In Act III, he loses all his belongings in the fire, but retains his cheerful nature. The multicultural research team of Lindsey Lunsford, Melvin L. Arthur, and Christine M. Porter provide a blunter view. A year later, a fire breaks out in the town, and the sisters and friends convene at the Prozorov house after a long night of trying to help the victims. Olga and Natasha have an argument about the Prozorov’s elderly servant, Anfisa, whom Natasha insists is too useless to be kept around. Chebutykin comes in, terribly drunk and depressed at having caused the death of a patient the other day. He announces to everyone that Natasha is having an affair with Protopopov, though actually, the whole town knows this. Masha has to be pulled, sobbing, from Vershinin's arms, but her husband compassionately asks that they start again. Olga has reluctantly accepted the position of permanent headmistress of the school where she teaches and is moving out. She is taking Anfisa with her, rescuing the elderly woman from Natasha.

Olga (the eldest sister) has worked as a schoolteacher and after school tutor for four years. Masha, middle sister and artist of the family (trained as a concert pianist), is married to Feodor Kulygin, a schoolteacher. Masha, younger than he, was enchanted by his wisdom but seven years later she sees through his pedantry and attempts to compensate for the emptiness between them. Irina, the youngest sister, is still full of expectation, speaking of going to Moscow and meeting her true love. The sisters grew up in Moscow, and they all long to return to the happiness of that time. Andrei is the only young man in the family; his sisters adore him. He falls in love with Natalia Ivanovna ("Natasha"), who is rather "common" compared to the sisters and regarded by them with disdain. The play begins on the first anniversary of the death of their father, Sergei Prozorov. It is also Irina's name-day, and everyone, including the soldiers (led by Vershinin) bringing with them a sense of noble idealism, come together to celebrate it. At the close of the act, Andrei confesses his feelings to Natasha, and proposes.

Three Sisters is a remarkable novel based on the true story of three Slovakian Jewish sisters, who endured the worst of humanity to forge new and hopeful lives on the other side. Intercropping with legumes—that is, growing some leguminous crop between the rows of intertilled crops, such as corn or cotton—is the simplest system of growing crops for soil improvement. This practice is an inexpensive and easy means of increasing crop yields, yet, while common in many sections, is not followed to the extent that it should be. The continuous growing of any one intertilled crop on the same land for a succession of years is not good farm practice; but where this is the custom, as is the case in many sections, the practice of intercropping with legumes will frequently keep a sufficient supply of humus in the land to maintain crop yields. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History broadens the classification from the specific Seneca Nation to that of the Haudenosaunee ( Iroquois) Confederacy in its description of the Three Sisters.
