I also spent a while researching fairy tales and their structure, before I decided upon Little Red Riding Hood. What left me wanting more: This book is a bit scary and should not be read to sensitive children. The wolf is shown eating the grandmother, and he is definitely a scary presence throughout. Little Red is also shown wearing the wolf's pelt at the end, which may also be challenging for sensitive animal lovers. This is definitely a dark story, and it would be better for children who enjoy a touch of the dark in their fairytales. Advice I would give to an aspiring illustrator would be to not judge your own work too early, it could be something beautiful! I try to nurture an idea as much as I can before I show others. Receiving critiques from your peers is vital in the creative process, but if you or others judge an idea before it has bloomed you might start to doubt something that could have been amazing. If you persevere, it might pay off! Bethan Woollvin graduated from the Cambridge School of Art with a First Class Degree in Illustration in 2015, and currently lives and works in Brighton as a freelance illustrator. Inspired by vintage illustration and printmaking, Bethan uses bold colours and quirky characters to tell stories with her illustrations. Final verdict: LITTLE RED is a simple recounting of the fairytale with a touch of horror/scary that is great for less sensitive readers before Halloween.

I was first introduced to this book a couple months ago, in my picturebook class. We looked at the shapes, the colors, how we moved from verso to recto along with the book. For those picturebook nerds like me, this is a great example of Molly Bang's ten rules and why they work. A witty twist on a favourite fairy tale, Little Red was a New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book . The perfect gift for fairy tale fans of all ages , complete with tree-shaped cover flaps, and bright, bold colours that make this a sumptuous sight to behold. I was at university whilst I was working on Little Red, so I guess going to lectures and seminars were a bit of a distraction – but in a good way!
Also group critiques were a large part of my studio time at university but they were also helpful in refining my story. On reflection the project has exceeded all expectations and intentions. I only decided to create a children’s book as an experiment at university, and it went on to win the Macmillan Childrens Book Competition, amongst other wonderful recognitions! A bold (both graphically and narratively) reimagining of the classic fairy tale, Little Red is truly subversive in that it subverts the concept of victimhood with a deliciously dark twist.
