About this deal

An ancient pict-capture of two Leviathan Pattern Siege Dreadnoughts of the Space Wolves Legion during the Battle of Prospero. Space Marine Forces Gone are the slightly soft, retro aesthetic of the old Termagants. In their place are a devilish deluge of teeth, claws and other spikey bits. What’s more, with every Termagant being around 4 components a piece, these things go together with exceptional speed and ease. They also retain a great deal of detail, so there has been no sacrifice in quality for quantity. Having just built a Primaris Redemptor Dreadnought for Warhammer 40,000 Imperium Delivery 23: Issues 87-90, which is made from approximately ten-thousand parts spread across three good-sized sprues, and which wiped the smile right off my face, I was expecting the Ballistus Dreadnought to put up a similar amount of objection. There is a vast amount to like here. If you’re a Space Marines fan, this is your dream come true. If you aren’t a Space Marines fan, you probbaly will be after seeing these miniatures. If you haven’t already enquired with your FLGS about them setting aside a copy of Leviathan for you, now is the time to do so. Warhammer 40,000 Leviathan Review – Final Thoughts Pros

Standing over 90 metres tall, the Leviathan has enough cargo room to hold over 2 full companies of guardsmen and all their wargear. Each Leviathan contains extensive communication and surveillance equipment, including satellite uplink capabilities and mobile nanobots used for reconnaissance and espionage that allow an Astra Militarum colonel and his command staff to coordinate the movements of an entire Astra Militarum regiment at the same time. The tormented and ravaged minds of those Astartes interred within are driven to the edge of madness by the little-understood mechanisms unique to the Leviathan, trapped in gore-soaked dreams of the lost Age of Darkness during the Horus Heresy which haunt the machines themselves, and soon suffer a final dissolution owing to the terrible strain the Leviathan inflicts on those who would dare to master it. Announced on the first day of Warhammer Fest 2023 (though we all had a fairly good idea of what was coming thanks to all sorts of rumours and other releases), Warhammer 40,000 Leviathan marks the birth of a new era for the world’s most popular tabletop wargame. We’re leaving 2021’s Ninth Edition behind and moving towards another future – one that looks to take the grimdark setting so synonymous with Games Workshop’s flagship IP and make is even darker. The Ballistus Dreadnought is a fearsome weapons platform armed with a versatile missile launcher and a devastating lascannon, the perfect counter to heavily armoured enemy monsters and tanks. Read more about the Space Marine side of the box here: Leviathan is just the beginning for the new edition of Warhammer 40,000. There’ll be a brisk pace of releases following hot on the heals of the launch set. Before the main hive fleet force lands, vanguard organisms like Von Ryan’s Leapers often embed themselves on the hive fleet’s target planet. These ambush-hunters lie in wait, avoiding detection until they can do as much damage as possible. Termagants Wielding a combi-weapon and two combat blades, this Phobos-armoured Lieutenant can infiltrate ahead of the main Space Marine force, sowing discord among his enemies and disrupting their battle lines. Sternguard Veteran Squad The miniatures are divided into 25 elite, battle-hardened Space Marines* – the Imperium’s ultimate defenders against innumerable horrors – and a seething swarm of 47 ravenous Tyranids that desire nothing more than to consume all the biomass in the galaxy. Let’s take a closer look at each army.

A Legion Leviathan Pattern Dreadnought may replace one or both of their Leviathan Siege Claws with built-in Meltaguns with any of these options: As the name suggests, Von Ryan’s Leapers are intended to be an agile, nimble unit, and these lithe, sinewy monsters capture the essence of that role with ease. Each is posed as if in mid-strike, natural weapons raised or Cthulhu-esque mouth-limbs reaching for a target. Again, they’re gross, but absolutely gorgeous. If you’re a big fan of Space Marines (like me) then you’ll still probably be pretty happy with these guys. There’s something fun about painting Space Marine armour and getting those highlights looking awesome. If, however, you’re new to Warhammer or aren’t as much of a big Space Marine fan, you may be a touch disappointed with these ones – but not much. Ballistus Dreadnought A Relic Leviathan Pattern Dreadnought may replace one or both of their Leviathan Siege Claws with built-in Meltaguns with any of these options: Overall, I’m left feeling somewhat conflicted. I love that Games Workshop is making much of 10th-edition 40k freely available, but at the same time it renders much of the Leviathan book’s contents inconvenient at best, redundant at worst. There’s a mismatch between the design philosophy of 10th Edition and the product used to launch it that seems to echo deeper rifts within the company. I’m optimistic about Warhammer 40,000’s 10th edition itself, but I’m concerned about Games Workshop becoming an increasingly closed-off, faceless corporation.

The conflict of the Octarius War also means that the Tyranids will assimilate vast quantities of the strong, survivable, highly adapatable Orkoid DNA that makes the Greenskins such successful survivors and tenacious opponents and incorporate it into their own bio-constructs. Indeed, worlds on the edge of the conflict have begun to record captures of Tyranid assault organisms that are now larger than ever before. The implications of Kryptman's manipulation of this alien threat are too horrible to contemplate.

Scattered across two identical sprues, the Termies themselves – a long-standing favourite amongst Tyranid collectors – are brand-new and improved models compared to their decades-old counterparts. Here are the sprues: This set will get you bang up to date with the current storyline in Warhammer 40,000, but if you want to explore the horrors of the Fourth Tyrannic War, there’s the Leviathan tie-in novel by Darius Hinks, in which the Ultramarines mount a desperate defence in the face of the monstrous Hive Fleet Leviathan. Four indomitable champions of various flavours lead the anti-Leviathan forces, with the Captain in Terminator Armour pre-eminent among them. You can’t quite make them out in the image above, but inside its mandibles the unit is sculpted as having a fang-filled maw. However, these fangs are very regular and linear, and don’t look very realistic – though I recognise the irony in describing part of a model of an alien “unrealistic”. This jars with the largely irregular, much more “natural” (again, I get it) aspects of its tentacles, spines and carapace. However, what is really nice about this transfer sheet is the diversity. As you can see from the image above, there are lots of non-standard markings, including transfers with metallic elements, with additional adornments, and other unique features. Personally, I’m itching for an opportunity to get some of the more unique Dark Angels transfers on my minis. Warhammer 40,000 Leviathan is, without doubt, the most impressive Warhammer release of the last few years. Hive Fleet Leviathan was the third and largest Tyranid hive fleet to invade the Milky Way Galaxy from beyond the intergalactic void. It first arrived in 997.M41 and its assault marked the start of the Third Tyrannic War for the Imperium of Man. This conflict was brought to a brief pause through the efforts of Inquisitor Lord Fidus Kryptman of the Ordo Xenos, who successfully diverted a large portion of the hive fleet into an assault upon the Ork Empire of Octarius in the Octarius System.
