About this deal

I think this might be the best retinol on the market at this price point. I never ever experienced irritation (or breakouts, or any sort of other bad skin reactions for that matter) while using this - and I actually got to incorporating this into my routine daily (and still, no irritation). MY RETINOL SERUM HAS CHANGED COLOUR, WHY? The colour is due the nature of the natural materials used in the formulation and are therefore prone to oxidation - we can however confirm that this does not negate the efficacy, nor the safety of the product. Found in many serums and creams, it’s easy to incorporate retinol into your skincare routine. The hard part is finding a product that’s right for you, particularly if you’re a beginner. It can do, yes. As mentioned, when your skin isn’t used to retinol, you may find you suffer redness, flaking, dryness and/or irritation. As well as finding the right retinoid for your skin type, it’s also key to build up usage, which in turn improves the skin’s tolerance levels. What age should you start using retinol?

As with all active skincare, application is key in reaping retinol success. Dr. Sturnham advises using yours only at night, after your cleanser and before your (gentle) night cream. “With a good quality serum, absorption will be rapid and there is no need to delay application of your moisturiser,” she says. Board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, is an associate professor of dermatology and the Director of Clinical and Cosmetic Research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He specializes in multiple areas of cosmetic and medical dermatology, including acne. Simply put, retinol – a type of retinoid – works by accelerating the rate of cell turnover in the skin, meaning new, fresh skin cells make their way to your skin surface faster than they would naturally. This action has a host of aesthetic benefits. If you have dry skin and you’ve tried retinol products before, then chances are you know how much they can exacerbate dryness. Because of this, we recommend that people with dry skin look for moisturizing creams that contain retinol rather than retinol-driven treatments or serums. This cream is a great one because it has a rich texture that maintains a light and non-greasy feel on the skin, and it contains a gentle form of retinol, vitamin C for antioxidant benefits, and hyaluronic acid for a boost of hydration. Retinol remains very effective for its original purpose of acne treatment and, since it boosts skin renewal, it’s also good for healing acne-related scars. The Mayo Clinic also notes that retinol can be effective for the treatment of other kinds of skin damage, including sun damage. In what forms is retinol available? Vitamin B3 and retinol work well together to reduce dark spots and hyperpigmentation, and the gentle formula is suitable for more sensitive skins or those new to retinol. Skin feels fresh and hydrated immediately after using and well into the next day, and the wrinkle-reducing effects are visible within 4-5 weeks. Our panel of over 200 beauty devotees diligently tried 14 brands of retinol serums for eight weeks. They told us all about each product — including how easy it was to apply, if they suffered any side effects and whether it made their skin look and feel better. Note: only experienced retinol users were given serums with a one percent concentration. When introducing your skin to retinol, it's vital not to try too much too soon. Beginners should start by using theirs once a week, slowly building up to every other night. Diving in at the deep end will likely lead straight to irritation and flaking. Patience is required when it comes to results too: expect to start noticing skin improvements in around three to six months, depending on the product you're using.

Unfortunately, retinol does come with some side effects, though these can be reduced by choosing the right formula for your skin type and applying it properly. You should always introduce retinol tentatively into your skincare routine at first, then build it up slowly as your skin becomes more tolerant. If you have marks in the form of post-acne scars, dark discoloration or deep wrinkles which give the appearance of uneven texture and tone, we suggest trying Scar, Mark and Wrinkle Solution with 1% Retinol. If you want to use both retinol and brightening vitamin C in your skincare routine, apply the latter ingredient in the morning to give your skin a breather. Some brands do blend the two together, but these products have been carefully formulated to not cause irritation, so don't take a DIY approach. How we test retinoid serums If you are looking to reduce the appearance of post-acne scars, wrinkles and dark spots, once your skin is comfortable with our Retinol Serum, upgrade to the next level with our higher-strength Scar, Mark, and Wrinkle Solution with 1% Retinol. We were impressed by how much it helped to reduce the darkness of post-acne spots and hyperpigmentation, as well as how soft it made the skin feel. The brand claims that it’s gentle enough to be used daily both in the morning and at night, but if you’re sensitive to retinol or it’s your first time using it, we recommend applying it every other night at first and slowly building up your tolerance. Our tester with dry, sensitive skin used it three times per week and she found that to be a great balance—it didn’t cause any irritation but she still saw impressive results with this application cadence.Dermatologists often regard retinol as the gold standard in skincare ingredients, but what is retinol and why is it so highly rated? Whichever retinoid serum you choose, start with a low dose of around 0.2% and increase the strength slowly, as side effects like tingling and flakiness are common. WHEN SHOULD I APPLY RETINOL SERUM IN MY ROUTINE?Retinol Serum is your PM ‘Treat’ step. Layer Retinol Serum as your last treatment and follow up with a moisturizer.
