About this deal

This is where SoK got really exciting. As much as I love the main Theonite Series, its heroes are comparatively inept with their powers. If Joan of Theonitegives us the first bumbling first steps into our magic system, the protagonists of The Sword of Kaigenare masters of it. In them, we get to see one particular type of theonite power (that being jiya, the ability to control water and ice) taken to its most intimate and spectacular extremes. la a Yammaninke preposition, similar to English ‘at,’ placed at the end of a phrase to indicate location.

Wang tends to use conversations to info-dump but i honestly didn’t mind. In my opinion, it wasn’t done in a way that was boring? I think there is a huge difference between info dumps that suit the plot and info dumps that are lazy writing. And I think this fits under the former. Just keep the glossary handy and you’ll be fine. Negedonthe fifth day of the eight-day Dunian week, named for the mythical human ancestor Nege from the Donkili, a day of work. Lindish a language originating on the western islands of Hades and spoken in some parts of Carytha and Abiria (nearly identical to Earth’s English). ba1) a Yammaninke adjective meaning ‘big,’ ‘great,’ or ‘important’ 2) a Yammaninke noun meaning ‘important person’ 3) a Yammaninke noun meaning ‘river.’Disa a country on the continent of Namindugu, a former Yammanka colony populated by the primarily tajaka descendants of native Disankalu and Yammanka colonizers. On a mountainside at the edge of the Kaigenese Empire live the most powerful warriors in the world, superhumans capable of raising the sea and wielding blades of ice. For hundreds of years, the fighters of the Kusanagi Peninsula have held the Empire’s enemies at bay, earning their frozen spit of land the name ‘The Sword of Kaigen.’ The Sword of Kaigen is an enthralling and rich tale about family, survival, reconciliation, past, and the future. Equally deep in narrative and immersive in action, this book makes its way as one of my all-time favourites. Also if you can pardon my water puns, that'd be great. Disanka(pl: Disankalu) 1) a person from Disa 2) an adjective describing a person or thing originating from the nation of Disa or its culture.

A life of dangerous adventures might seem worth it now, when you are young and seemingly invincible, but one day, you will have children, and you will not want that life for them.”

Honestly, sometimes it even felt like I was reading Brandon Sanderson’s magical battles and that’s pretty much one of the biggest praises I can ever give to any high fantasy author. Wang provided not only one but two climax sequences in The Sword of Kaigen; the first one began at approximately 35% and the second one at 75% mark of the book. I can say with temerity that both of them were stupendous in quality. Showing the raw and violent power of the magic systems, the calamity that appeared when the bloodline of the gods clashed was bloody destructive. I need to also mention that the book features one of the most memorable duels I’ve ever read in a fantasy novel. Not only was the duel itself magnificent in execution, but it was also so emotionally impactful that it formed unforgettably vivid images in my head. The Sword of Kaigen is a war story, a brutally pulse-pounding one. The great characterizations enhanced the sense of danger and impending loss the characters felt during and after the war. Bad things happened to good people and you WILL feel their palpable pain and tragedy. The piercing blade of ice will stab at your empathy, white snow will turn crimson, the summoning of the Whispering Blade will break your heart, and you will beg for more because you won’t able to stop reading the book until you’ve reached the satisfying conclusion.

And when the dust settles and the frantic drumbeat of your skewered heart wanes, the story eases you into a denouement that fittingly takes its time in assuring you of the final outcome, the future ahead and the power of empathy. Siyatakaloor Siyakalo the eleventh month of the twelve-month Dunian calendar, named for the mythical martyr Princess Siyata from the Donkili (roughly coincides with Earth’s May).Yet, despite all the flashiness, I love how the waterbending (referred in this book as jiya and the practitioners as jijakalu) and water physics are explored as philosophy or paradigm. Whispering Blade is a cold, deadly technique owned by Matsuda clan: it's a molecular ice manipulation that requires the user to be as focused and unyielding as a glacier or a mountain. In contrast, there is another jiya technique from another family that embraces the vitality of raging waves. This quote sums up these different schools of thought nicely. gbaatia shortened form of kewaatior kettewaati(pl: gbaatinu) a Yammanka measure of time (36 minutes in Earth time). It's a mature book in the way that it presents, understands, and resolves various conflicts, showing every one on whom the spotlight lingers to be deeply human. There are no mustache twirling villains here.

This happened when the next chapter in the lineup was told from the perspective of a young Misaki, living in a far-away city, and fighting crime with a few of her friends. Each of those friends have their own magic to wield (including Misaki) and suddenly this very well-defined, well-plotted tale about Mamoru learning to fill an important role within his very traditional family turned into something that felt more like a rip-roaring superhero novel as it bounced across the rooftops of a foreign city. The character developments and themes were so well-executed. The things that were meant to be slow burn were so SATISFYING to see unfold *ehem*. I was rooting HARD for that to tie up well. an(sing. n) 1) a Yammaninke personal pronoun meaning ‘we’ 2) a Yammaninke possessive pronoun meaning ‘our.’ It is a perpetual pleasure to finally find a book you can give yourself up to, a book you can curl inside and let the rest of the world flow around you. And it is always an agony to have to uncurl yourself and return to the real world, feeling abruptly unmoored, like a sleepwalker awakened mid-dream wondering what exactly they’d been doing. alu(sing. a) 1) a Yammaninke personal pronoun meaning ‘they’ or ‘them’ 2) a Yammaninke possessive pronoun meaning ‘their’ 3) a Yammaninke determiner and demonstrative pronoun meaning ‘those.’

In its heart, The Sword of Kaigen tells a story about the titular peninsula, where clans of warrior have been guarding the peninsula from foreign invasion for generations. After decades of peace the invasion is looming yet again, and this time, the ripples of the dark past it brings may break the families apart. The story mainly follows the Matsuda family, the leading martial clan of Takayubi village. It is told from the perspectives of Mamoru, the eldest son of the second son, and Misaki, Mamoru's mother with unbelievable secret past. The narrative flows slowly in the beginning, ever building up into unavoidable convergence of crashing waves. ML Wang has written characters with such depth and humanity, that had the plot completely flown out of the window, I might not even have noticed, so engrossed was I. And there is a bevy to choose from. I mean, we have Mamoru! And Takeru! And Takashi! And Setsuko! fonyakaa shortened form of fonyojaka(pl: fonyakalu) a person with fonya (the ability to control air).
