About this deal

This invaluable guide will appeal to anyone no matter their experience, the equipment they have (or not) or where they live. Bartlett also adds additional descriptions, based on his own personal notes from decades of stargazing. Those “insider tips” can be very helpful when you’re stargazing in imperfect viewing conditions, or at different times of the year.

You don’t have to be mad to work in a lighthouse – but it helps.” Hill’s memoir tells of dropping out of art school to become a Scottish lighthouse keeper in the summer of 1973. He started on Pladda, a tiny island off of Arran, and also had postings on Ailsa Craig and Hyskeir. What’s remarkable is that he was able to turn just 12 weeks of experiences he had 30 years before into a whole book that never feels thin on material. “I realise it doesn’t sound long,” he admits at one point, “but we’re talking life-changing experiences here.” It's true that telescopes can cost thousands of dollars, but some good ones can be had for only a few hundred. Can't afford the scope you want? Save up until you can. More time using binoculars while building a telescope fund will be time you'll never regret.

Ask any astronomer which book they might recommend as to how to find objects in the sky and the majority will suggest Turn Left at Orion. With easy to use guides covering all of the constellations in the Northern hemisphere this book is the perfect accompaniment to any telescope helping beginners learn their way around the constellations, identifying the brightest and most interesting deep sky objects and observing them through their telescope. Much better than any phone or tablet app!

I bring this up, because, Christine, in the story, is envious of Moon the same way, because unlike her family, where she is supposed to do well in school all the time, Moon can get away with getting Cs, and no one cares.

In NASA Missions to Mars, Piers Bizony paints a beautiful portrait of this most Earth-like of worlds, capturing it through our past imaginations, our present knowledge and, tantalisingly, how it might become our next planetary home.

When Moon’s family moves in next door to Christine’s, Moon goes from unlikely friend to best friend―maybe even the perfect friend. The girls share their favorite music videos, paint their toenails when Christine’s strict parents aren’t around, and make plans to enter the school talent show together. Moon even tells Christine her deepest secret: that she sometimes has visions of celestial beings who speak to her from the stars. Who reassure her that earth isn’t where she really belongs. If you’re looking for an astronomy book with a lot of pictures and visual guides, this one’s for you. It has hundreds of drawings, charts and maps that will help you observe the night sky and understand what you see.On top of the story itself being so precious and offering up such a lovely story of friendship and overcoming insecurities and loneliness, there's also the art, which is iconic and stunning and sweet. I adore how expressive the characters are and the color palette used — Jen's style is one of my all-time favorites.
