About this deal

Thin, delicate and oily, the whisky floats in the mouth and tingles a little on the tongue. The fruitiness is pronounced here, as well. The apple in particular stands out. Orange toffee, roasted nuts and brown sugar round off the less complex but quaffable single malt. Every now and then, the alcohol bites a little, despite the low 40% abv. Finish

Singleton of Dufftown 12 Year Old Whisky | Master of Malt

I have read – and I’m not sure I believe this – that The Singleton was recently the fifth best-selling brand of single malt scotch in the world. News to me. The name was revived in 2006 in a plan that involved the malt of three distilleries, combined to create a single malt super-brand that could challenge the likes of Glenlivet and Glenfiddich for sales. Dufftown was chosen along with Glendullan and Glen Ord. The Singleton of Glen Ord was originally earmarked for Asia, while Glendullan was destined for the US and Canada. The Singleton of Dufftown, meanwhile, remained in Europe. Today, however, all three brands are available worldwide in an attempt to boost sales. So far, it’s been working. The Singleton regularly resides among the top five best selling single malt brands in the world.

Nose: quite full with lots of fresh oak and nutty malt accents. Seems they did a good job maturing the stuff, as the aroma displays the sort of richness you only get from combining different cask types. I liked it right off the bat. Diageo set out in 2015 to have the best selling single malt in the world – with the three brand The Singletons concept. Never mind that three different malts can not be the best selling single malt – sic! The Dufftown range includes 12, 15 and 18-year-old expressions and there have been various no-age-statement releases including Tailfire and Spey Cascade. There is no reason to spend money on this 12-year-old, and no reason to drink it. It is inoffensive and clinical, alcohol in distilled water, like from a lab. The tiniest trace of flavour; zero personality of any kind.

A straightforward, nutty and malty single malt from Speyside, the Singleton of Dufftown was released to replace the Singleton of Auchroisk. It’s aged in a high proportion of European oak casks.

History

I’m no expert, but I enjoy the character of single malts. Not everyone likes the flavour of every single malt, but they all have a distinct personality or they are not single malt. On the palate lots of malt some wood and a bit of sherry but nothing exciting happens after that. It has no legs so to speak. There are very few whiskies that I actively dislike. Certainly I prefer some to others, and I'm indifferent to many, but I seldom take an active dislike to a bottling. It seems to me that most whisky made these days is pretty well executed technically and, while many fall short of greatness, minimum standards are usually met.
