About this deal

Clay pot cooking - Wikipedia

Tami, I agree with you. I have been using mine for about 50-55 years now and it is labeled Germany and it is unglazed. I love what I cook in it, and have used it for fish and poultry with no lingering odors- I do carefully scrub it after use, but without soap. I have never made a BAD meal in it. Anyone whose bacteria can survive 500 degrees for a hour or more in a clean pot, perhaps needs to clean their pot a little more. I have never tried bread, but will be trying it this weekend in my smaller, unglazed pot. I hope that it is as great as everyone is claiming. Reply Individual clay beds are considered to provide specific properties for cooking, and cooking vessels of a particular type often are valued for being made of the traditional type of clay. [5] The micaceous clay found at Taos Pueblo holds heat for a long time. [5] The pots made from this clay are considered to contribute flavor to what is cooked within them. Clay roasting pots called Römertopf ("Roman pot") are a recreation of the wet-clay cooking vessels used by the Etruscans, and appropriated by the Romans, by at least the first century BC. [1] [2] They are used for a variety of dishes in the oven and are always immersed in water and soaked for at least fifteen minutes before being placed in a cold oven. [1] [2] Since its introduction in 1967, it has influenced cooking traditions in Germany and neighbouring countries. I have two unglazed Romertopf’s for all the other meats…a large and smaller one…tbey all have been great cookers. Never use soap in a clay pot, to clean, getout you largest soup pot or lobster pot or I guess the oval dutch oven would work , fill with water, bring to a boil an immerse the romertopf, keep it at a simmer for 10/15 mins – that how i do my r pot, maybe once a year or so. Reply The Romertopf will not overcook or burn any dish, so you can put it in the oven, go out and run errands, and come home to a delicious meal without worry. Do I have to soak Romertopf? I used my usual recipe of 450g flour, 310 water and 100g active starter (stretch and fold x 5 times over 6 hours and overnight prove in fridge), scored and baked on parchment for 15 min lid on at 250c then 25 min lid off at 240c. Took the loaf out of the pot and placed on oven shelf for 5 min after I turned the oven off. The ability to cook with no added fat or oil means that you have no added fat or calories in the meal you’re preparing. Because the Romertopf clay pot has a lid, it helps keep your oven cleaner. Plus, there is no scrubbing to clean the pot either!

Do you soak the clay cooker in water first for the bread? I’ve made tons of sourdough loafs in dutch oven but never used the clay

When it came time to heat up the oven, I heated it to 245 degrees Celsius, with the romertopf in right from the start (ie in the unheated oven). I did not presoak the pot. This is not true the real German clay pots do not have a glazed bottom and the results are not at all the same. You do not want a glazed one, after 5 or 6 uses your pot will become seasoned. Please read about this before you buy. I have a clay pot and it’s all I use it is amazing. To bad more people don’t know about these Reply Transferring the bread to the (very hot) romertopf was a little challenging. I put the romertopf bottom on a board, transferred the first piece of dough carefully in. The second piece did, I confess, get dropped a bit - but that didn't seem to matter. (Burnt fingers the first time I did it though). It may be easier if there is just one piece of dough to transfer. Slashed the dough, put the lid on, and popped it in the oven. No need for ice or water to create steam - the dough itself is wet enough to create steam within the romertopf.Absolutely, just don’t use soap to clean it, only water and a stiff bristle brush, after it has cooled down. If it’s is extra greasy use some baking soda & it should come clean.
