About this deal

Vintage 35MM film camera - Pentax ME Model 35MM Camera - We have a great selection of Vintage Cameras Everything is in the eye of the beholder. This test is for me to see what I like best and you to see what you like best. And guess what? We may have different opinions, which is great! Variety is the spice of life. The shot taken with the 50mm f/1.7 is underexposed and by at least a stop or three. How does something like that happen? The camera settings didn’t change…I am guessing it has something to do with the aperture blades not opening/ closing properly resulting in the underexposure…or possibly the electronic shutter on the ME Super was no bueno??? As stated above, the camera is only dead batteries (or no batteries) manual at ‘125x’ or bulb mode, so it isn’t a true manual camera for the ‘all mechanical’ crowd, but it does have full manual mode with the cheap button batteries installed. It also works very well in ‘auto’ mode, however, I’d add about +1 exposure compensation for print film, some of the samples above are slightly under-exposed.

Great review! Never been much of a Pentax fan, but the way you go about testing the camera is simply a joy to read 🙂 The 8 second slowest shutter speed is wrong…..the ME will shoot much slower…..more than 30 seconds, and accurately. I don't know what this satellite was, maybe it's one of SpaceX's starlink sats? It went across the entire frame from left to right starting at around 2:54 AM Pacific DST on Aug/15 2020, but the leftmost part was cut because it was between two frames. To cry: Of my ME I only have the empty body (without interior parts) and two lenses 50 mm f1.4 and 200 mm f4, the 28 mm f2.8 I adapted it for Sony37 (article in 35mmc) It is incredibly difficult to achieve anything but good results with the ME Super so makes a great beginner's camera in my opinion.

When I received the test roll from the lab, I was both surprised and disappointed. The 50mm F1.7 lens turned out to be an excellent performer, and due to the fantastic viewfinder, I nailed focus on every frame. This camera & lens combo can focus as well or better than my autofocus cameras.

Speaking of batteries, the ME Super takes two LR44 batteries, which are still cheap and readily available today, so you don’t have to worry about the camera becoming obsolete any time soon. Building quality is IMO inferior to the Spotmatics, K series and M series I own, after the 70s the main builders started to cut strength to manufacture light cameras, the Super A is tiny but handles well thanks to the front and rear grib, it's more solid than other cameras from the 80s but still not outstanding. The additional grips make the camera easier to handle than a M seriesThis review assumes that the ME Super is in good working condition - the vast majority of those still around today are not. Since I originally wrote this the light meter in mine has become completely unreliable, a typical problem with the electronics of these cameras. I started by grabbing my SMC Pentax-M 50/1.4, SMC Pentax-M 50/1.7 and SMC Pentax-A 50/2. I set them on the picnic table to take a picture of them and said to myself, why don’t I throw in the SMC Pentax-M 40/2.8 pancake and SMC Pentax 55/1.8 in the mix just for fun? So I did. The Super A also has two flash modes, TTL Auto and Programmed Auto. These modes are determined by the type of flash used and the settings on the flash unit. I bought a Pentax AF280T for TTL flash support, but have not tried it yet on my Super A. I’d definitely love to see this being produced again since Pentax has announced they could be producing film cameras again. I think the key thing that lets the ME Super down is that it’s hard to come by one that works properly, due to its electronic shutter. If Pentax produced this again, I think it’d be an amazing go-to camera for street photography. The other major plus is the fastest shutter speed of 1/2000th of a second. This is double the speed of my other three film cameras and has definitely saved me a few times when the sun has come out while using iso400 film. I don't want to shoot at f16 or f22 and having a faster shutter speed means that f8 and f11 are still completely usable. The modes are all fairly self explanatory otherwise. When in auto mode the shutter speed indicator in the viewfinder shows you the speed the camera will shoot at. In the manual mode, the two little buttons select the shutter speeds with indicators in the viewfinder telling you if your chosen speed is going to over or underexpose – when neither is lit, you have correct exposure. Even so, the price differences between options should stay the same.

Pentax ME Super Review

This outwardly simple camera’s semi-automatic nature, its diminutive size, and its surprisingly good performance left us with some questions. Specifically, why is this camera so often overlooked by shooters? How’d they make this thing so small? And why doesn’t Pentax get any respect? My name is Dan Marinelli. I am from San Diego, CA... where I work as a registered nurse and if I'm not working I'm either surfing, climbing/hiking or reading a book.…
