About this deal

When not shuffling between caravans to interview cast members, I headed out to explore the island, driving two or three thousand feet up on the mountain road, where lianas hang from massive ficus trees and 20ft ferns seemingly explode at the roadside. The volcano on Montserrat, once one of the gentlest and sweetest islands in the region, is still active after 20 years and shows no sign of calming down. An exotic holiday for Miss Marple is ruined when a retired major is killed… As Miss Marple sat basking in the Caribbean sunshine she felt mildly discontented with life. True, the warmth eased her rheumatism, but here in paradise nothing ever happened. Eventually, her interest was aroused by an old soldier’s yarn about a strange coincidence. Infuriatingly, just as he was about to show her an astonishing photograph, the Major’s attention wandered. He never did finish the story. Unlike most TV series that are spawned from books this is the other way round! The books are based on the TV series, specifically the first few with Richard Poole, Camille, Fidel and Dwayne and, as in the TV series, set on the island of Saint-Marie. Where the TV series has gone a bit off the boil for me now - too many new characters - this series, now on its fourth outing has continued to be of an equal standard of quality. As with the TV series, sometimes I am ahead of the crime busters and sometimes I remained completely flummoxed until the reveal. In this book, sadly, I was a bit too ahead of the game but that didn't really irk me too much as there was still a lot of banter and humour to be had from the rest of the book.

Miss Marple: A Caribbean Mystery (TV Movie 1989) - IMDb

Really a great read, I wish the other books in the series would be available one kindle as the are really enjoyable and that is mostly how I do my reading these days.

Murder in the Caribbean is the fourth original story from the creator and writer of the hit BBC One TV series, Death in Paradise, featuring on-screen favourite detective, DI Richard Poole. It is always a pleasure to return to this series, although the author made us wait quite a bit for this new instalment! Nevertheless, here we have another compelling murder mystery that seems rather straightforward but of course isn’t :0) Inspector Weston: You wouldn't know if this lady comes from a village in England called St. Mary Mead? This in part because legally, not every country shares the same definition, classification and data collection of femicides, resulting in cases of violence against women being wrongly categorized as regular homicides. The report issued by ECLAC notes how in many cases, killings of women by their current or former partners are not considered femicides, even when there have been previous reports of domestic violence, as in the case of Abril. Furthermore, only a minority of countries in the region record gender-based killings of transsexual women and/or female sex workers as femicides, further skewing the numbers.

Although all countries in Latin American ratified the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and 14—Mexico included—ratified the convention’s optional protocol that allows a special UN committee to monitor states’ compliance, these commitments have not translated to a decrease in femicides. Having watched the series, I ‘knew’ what the characters and locations looked like, which added to my enjoyment.

The cost of violence in Mexico

As 2015 unfolded, one-by-one Russia’s principal political supporters in Latin America and the Caribbean entered… Robert wrote for many years - selling scripts to the BBC, ITV and independent film companies - but before 2011 the only script of his that was actually broadcast was a Radio 4 afternoon play called From Abstraction about the life of Paul Wolfskehl. Guadeloupe is typically Franco-Caribbean, with delicate coastlines hiding a volcanic, wild interior (PH Giraud/Icon Valley) Photo: PH Giraud/Icon Valley We start with Richard spying on Dwayne, trying to catch him out. Then there's an explosion at the harbour and a suspected death, followed by a break in where a ruby has been left. And so begins a rather convoluted tale, the body count rising steadily, until, eventually, that niggle that Richard inevitably has in every case becomes clear and the its a race to the end to get their suspect and prove it all! We do also hear occasionally from the "killer" along the way. I wasn't too fussed about these parts as I felt they were a bit unnecessary and also felt a bit out of place for me. The report – the first UN Human Development Report focusing on the Caribbean – is the result of extensive consultations with 450 experts, practitioners and leaders and reflect a large-scale survey with 11,555 citizens in the seven assessed countries in region: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.
