Crinoline, the period of costume history from 1840-1865, is the time period in which Sweeney Todd is set. One defining feature from this time period is missing from a majority of the movie, the Crinoline. Crinoline’s were the main shift from the time period before, and these under garments held the dresses out to huge, even extreme, sizes. The leading players in the movie do not particularly follow all of the traditional Crinoline styles, but the ensemble members come very close. For example, in the song, “Pirelli's Miracle Elixir” there are many times that the camera would sweep over the ensemble and they were all dressed according to period. The women had their hair in the traditional twist and bonnets, but the leading females never wore their hair as such nor did they wear bonnets. This movie, while succeeding with the ensembles costumes, does not truly replicate the time period. What one must remember about the movie is that it is stylized and the costumes contain elements from the time period without fully fulfilling the requirement that comes with a realistic period piece. Todd then demands to know why Mrs. Lovett lied to him, to which Mrs. Lovett then confesses her love for him, and promises she would be a better wife than Lucy ever was. Todd pretends to forgive her, but later throws her into the furnace, burning her alive as retribution for her lies. Todd is exiled to Australia and after many years, he is able to return to London, seeking revenge against Turpin. He starts working as a barber again, but hate has invaded his entire soul and killing becomes an obsession. He murders his customers with a razor while his partner in crime, Mrs. Lovett, bakes their flesh into meat pies.

Johanna, played by Jayne Wisener, is the daughter of Benjamin and Lucy Barker. After her mother poisoned herself, she was adopted by Judge Turpin, who has now turned his lecherous eye towards his beautiful young ward. However, Johanna falls in love with the young sailor Anthony, played by Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace Wayland!), who swears to steal her away so they can be together. It must be noted, though, that “Johanna” is one of the creepiest, most stalker-ish songs ever.
