About this deal

Young crime lovers, meanwhile, will snap up Serena Patel’s lively, funny Anisha, Accidental Detective (Usborne), with zany illustrations from Emma McCann, featuring a down-to-earth, logical heroine drawn into a tall tale of a kidnapped bridegroom and a scheme to sabotage a wedding. Anisha must follow all the clues to save her beloved aunt Bindi from heartbreak – even if it does mean she’ll have to wear an itchy orange bridesmaid’s lehenga … The action was so gripping that I thought I was in the book... great for all young ages that love a fantasy filled with amazing description and daredevil stunts. Can't wait for the sequel!' Alex has time to add only a brief message to the note he and his grandfather leave for his mother. There’s a race to St Pancras and thereafter to Paris, for Alex’s latest gift from his grandfather, an old, ugly tin robot is wanted. What is this gift? Who wants it and why? Furthermore, the nature of those who hunt them down is something terrifying; it’s like they’re Monstrous Devices. They’re charged with knife-edged mini drones, or fliers, as Alex’s grandfather informs him. There are life-sizers, too.

Messages about grief and loss that suggest death isn't as scary as we think it is, and perhaps there's a lovely afterlife. Hugely original, exciting debut novel... a fantastical but entirely believable world with scary killer robots oiled to perfection with automaton history, surprising characters and dry humour... Get hold of a copy, wind it up and let yourself go.' The Times His grandfather was pretty obnoxious in general. He was constantly flippant and capable of solving any problem they came across easily, leaving little to no sense of actual danger. He was also incredibly cavalier with the life of his grandson. He sent a robot to him knowing full well it could put him in danger because he didn't want this other group to have it. What the flip Gramps? The action was so gripping that I thought I was in the book... great for all young ages that love a fantasy filled with amazing description and daredevil stunts. Can't wait for the sequel!' * Barnaby, aged 11 *AUDIOBOOK awarded as one of the Notable Children’s Recordings 2019by the ALSC, a division of the AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION – “With great aplomb and distinct accents, Allan Corduner throws listeners, along with the main character Alex, into a world in which robots are alive, ancient magical powers can come to life, and Alex’s grandfather eats too many sweets.” Tea Cooper has woven an engaging tale around the life story of Francis Greenaway and his wife Mary. Her research and understanding of the times […] MONSTROUS DEVICES también está disponible en español como PEQUEÑOS ROBOTS MALVADOS de Alfaguara. Para más información, ¡pincha aquí! In The Shadow Arts, Alex is still desperate to know more about his dad and grandfather in hopes of learning more about himself. How much do you think biology matters? Is who we are more about our learned morals and values than our DNA? This one is special. Look after it,” writes Grandfather when he sends Alex a 1920s tin robot through the post from Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.

I enjoyed everything about Damien Love's debut.' Anthony Horowitz, bestselling author of the Alex Rider series This book is a fabulous choice for teachers! It serves as the springboard for numerous lesson ideas. A science unit in which students learn about the five simple machines then employ that knowledge by designing and constructing their own robots. Mathematical concepts obviously will be needed in conjunction with the construction as well as in determining the distance traveled by the novel's young protagonist, Alex, and his grandfather as they trek across Europe. That adventure easily lends itself to a unit on geography. History comes into play by studying the invention and different applications of robots over the years. (You could even debate the merits of automation of jobs.) Language arts lessons are seemingly endless; rewriting the ending, writing the story from one of the robots' points of view, changing the setting, etc. Vocabulary, spelling, you name it, this book is a gold mine! A great read. The descriptive writing really created an incredible image in my mind of what was happening. Can't wait for the sequel.' * Max, aged 14 * The toy robot accompanies Alex and Grandpa to Paris and as the story unfolds we discover its history and why the evil villains in the story will stop at nothing to get it. But Alex’s robot isn’t the only robot, there are also armies of toy robots, life sized robots and fliers (drone like robots). Time and time again Alex and his grandfather have to defend themselves from the robots and the girl who unleashes them.De Nederlandse vertaling wordt uitgegeven door Uitgeverij Condor, met de ultracoole titel ROBOTJACHT. I'll admit that the last few chapters felt a bit rushed and happened way too fast, but I absolutely digged that ending. I loved that Alex took control and got familiar with the macabre. Love takes us on a whirlwind tour of Europe, filled with monstrous tin robots as well as the glamour of snow clad Europe, tea and cakes! I'm really looking forward to the next book, Shadow Arts, and to see what happens next! My novel Monstrous Devices (a strange adventure for readers aged 9-99, stuffed with magic, mystery, derring-do and generally ill-advised behaviour) is available in the USA from Penguin Random House, and in the UK from Oneworld. Several famous paintings are described and discussed. Descriptions of the geography of Germany and France.

A superbly assured debut… an effortless, atmospheric evocation of place and history combine in an unforgettable, immersive reading experience.' When Alex’s grandpa shows up suddenly and whisks him on an adventure, Alex is desperately trying to figure out why. He learns gradually about robots that have taken on human characteristics and one in particular that has enough power to control an entire population. His grandpa is reluctant with information, especially information involving Alex’s father, leaving Alex to figure out the clues himself. What is the most exciting part of Eid? From food to fabulous outfits, find out everything you need to know about EidIt is hard to believe that this fantastic, mega-original novel is Love's first book. The author speeds through his thrillingly ingenious tale with the confidence and creativity of a seasoned storyteller." -- South China Morning Post This grandad and grandson adventure has all the hallmarks of a whopping kids’ thriller.' The Big Issue, Kids’ Books of the year While the grandfather didn't grow on me, I liked Alex's character. He embodied the innocence of a twelve year old thrust into a world of magic and secrets that he was struggling to understand. I think Alex's youth and him still trying to grasp the truth about his broken family makes the events of the story much better.
