Oct 25 Yearning Teens, Frustrated Romance, Pretty Skies — Is There Anything Else to Makoto Shinkai? But what really makes Monotone Blue stand out as a romance manga, and as a manga about anthropomorphic animals in school, is the way Nagabe cultivates atmosphere in the world of the story. The wide, empty panels and closeups on hands and tails instead of faces create a sense of isolation and intimacy simultaneously. Aoi and Hachi are both uncomfortable in the school environment, but together they manage to create a space where they can feel safe.

The anthropomorphic animal of it all isn’t just a story in Monotone Blue.Instead, it’s crucial to understand how the characters move through the world and how they connect to each other. Instead of focusing on the common theme of predator versus prey, Monotone Bluelooks at the world through the monotone eyes of a cat and how it brightens when a lizard with a blue tail walks into it. As much as the beautiful art captures the animal characteristics of the cast of characters, it’s how Nagabe captures their emotions and animalistic qualities when it comes to love that makes this one-shot shine. Warning/Spoiler: This manga includes images of attempted rape/assault, bullying and slight self harm. The American Dirty Pair comics by Toren Smith and Adam Warren are some of the best comics of the 90s...

This was a sweet and quiet story with some heavy topics. We follow a cat named Hachi who is bored with life, until a transfer student Aoi joins his class. He is a lizard who is closed off from people because of his past. They become friends and their relationship blossoms slowly. Nagabe is a mangaka known for his elegant and haunting fantasy manga series The Girl from the Other Side and its many spinoffs. In Monotone Blue, Nagabe tries his hand at a different setting and world to explore a romance developing between an anthropomorphic cat and his new lizard classmate. The recurring image of Aoi and Hachi’s different ways of wearing school shoes — Hachi stepping on the heel instead of wearing them properly the way Aoi does — helps reinforce how different the two of them are. Aoi is not only a shy model student, but also a cold-blooded reptile species. Hachi is a delinquent who sleeps through his classes and a warm fluffy cat. As Hachi and Aoi discover, Aoi’s cool scales help Hachi cool off in the summer heat, and Hachi’s warmth helps Aoi regulate his temperature. Their differences are what make them work together.

I'm normally not into the furry or beastmen category within the Yaoi/BL/shounen ai genre. That being said, I wound up falling down the rabbit hole in the form of Nagabe's works anyways.

The manga is the serialized version of Nagabe's "Escalate" one-shot manga that appeared in the "Kemono Jingai BL Special" anthology manga book in July 2017. Nagabe launched the manga in Be Boy Gold's August 2019 issue in June 2019. The realistic art style is beautiful and the way the author portrays the life of the characters feels really realistic and makes it easy to digest. The character designs are distinct and recognizable, the theme is easy to grasp and the author does and amazing job developing the characters and plot as the story progresses. It is written in a way that makes you feel what the characters are feeling, it makes you happy when they are happy, regretful when they are. The only fault that Monotone Bluehas is that it isn’t a full series. With two compelling characters that begin working through the emotions and hang-ups with connecting to others, I want more. It feels like the story just ends with so much more to be said between the two. Having reached across their insecurities it feels too unresolved not even to get a small epilogue. With gorgeous art and an array of emotions, I want more Monotone Blueand hope Nagabe will add to the one-shot as other mangaka have done. It's the most wonderful time of the year! No, not Christmas, we're talking about ShortBox Comics Fair. The brilliant small...

I haven’t seen anyone mention this online yet, but: Based on the events of the manga (and its very short almost-NSFW precursor, “Escalate”), there is some room to interpret the lizard character as a trans man/transmasculine person. It’s nearly impossible to find a Boy’s Love manga with a trans male lead, so it was a pleasant surprise. For Hachi, his territorial behaviors and solitude make his feeling of romance extremely intense. But for Aoi, his fear and past trauma, coupled with his urge to run and protect himself, make his walls almost too high for Hachi to scale. This complexity and how Nagabe unfolds each layer helps set this apart from other anthropomorphic stories.
