It’s hard coating also prevents scuffing, scratching and other damage. However, varnishing with resin can be quite time consuming. Thanks for your comment. I would avoid using alcohol inks as an underpainting for oils. These inks are dye based, so unlike pigment-based oil paints they will fade over time. Their alcohol-base can also cause discolouration in any paint layered on top. Alcohol Inks also perform best on non-porous surfaces – where they are less likely to bleed and feather – but these surfaces don’t provide good adhesion for oils. These inks, and the varnishes we recommend for them, will also be disturbed by the use of many of the mediums and solvents used in oil painting – so your design most likely won’t stay put even if it is varnished.
