It really is an all purpose tool and it does not surprise me why it has received the praise that has been heaped upon it since it's launch late last year. The response is pretty much perfect too – not too hard to trigger, not too easy. This is reason alone to buy it, and an achievement all round.

Each of the Hydrasynth's LFOs feature a STEP mode for patterns up to 8 steps. Using five of these mini step sequencers at once, you have a huge amount of room to really manipulate your sound. The Main System controls are where you navigate the patch banks, configure system settings, and can view parameters like the envelopes, waveforms, and filters in the OLED screen. The Noise feature has 7 different options. These now include red, blue, violet and grey noise which pushes the Hydrasynth to new sound design capabilities! Industry-standard MIDI and USB/MIDI interfaces are available on the Hydrasynth, but we go deeper and allow the use of CV / Gate interfaces for connecting to the modular world. This opens a door to the unlimited expansion of your musical horizons.But it doesn’t end there; two filters offer 12 modes in total, from LPG to 12dB octave-morphing. Then there’s the LFOs, 5 envelope generators, ring modulator, noise generator, mixer and effects (including modulation, ambience and more) so you can send your signal on whatever wild path you choose. Excellent product for sound designers and it is easy to study the sounds created by the manufacturer. Once selecting a sound, go to the the MOD MATRIX or MACRO buttons and this will allow for dissection of, and provide understanding in building ones own sounds. Combining the performable keyboard setup with the advanced arpeggiation, CV and filter controls, the Hydrasynth becomes an intuitive, tactile unit that lets creativity flow freely.As well as performance controls, we saw earlier how straightforward it is to rope in conventional modulators. Of those, the five LFOs are identical, having all the expected waveforms, noise, plus a user waveform with up to eight steps. Each step of this 'almost sequencer' is programmed by those ever-present encoders, with a smoothing option if necessary. You can also generate waveforms with the Mutators in both FM and Sync modes so you don't have to use another oscillator (unless you want to!)

A very exciting different synthesizer, with absolutely massive arrays of possibilities for sound creation.Giving you more tools to manipulate your sound, the Hydrasynth's three oscillators are fed through a mixer, a Noise Generator and a Ring Modulator. Filter 2: 12 dB (SEM-style) per octave, includes Continuous Sweep from lowpass, bandpass, up to highpass) With the Hydrasynth Desktop, you have the same great sound engine found in the Hydrasynth Keyboard but without the keyboard. The durations of the ADR stages can be set to seconds or subdivisions of the tempo, giving you envelopes that play in sync to your song. My process for setting up a patch in this style is fairly straightforward, though it should be understood that our results will be more suited for sound effects and textures, as they forego conventional notes and pitches. First, I like to tune an oscillator down as low as it will go. By default, Hydrasynth lets you tune an oscillator down as far as 36 semitones, or three octaves, below the note being played, but we can push the pitch down even further by applying an envelope or two with maximum sustain as pitch modulation sources with negative depth. This would be equivalent to using a voltage offset generator in the context of a modular patch, which is helpful for something like turning a self-oscillating filter into an LFO, for example.

The Hydrasynth effects chain goes beyond the typical ones found in other synths. Pre-effects and post-effects give you some unique ways to process your sound, including pitch effects, Lo-Fi, EQ, and Distortion.Among the many features that have been added to the Hydrasynth over the course of its firmware updates, one that really expands its capabilities as a generative sound source is the ability to define multiple trigger sources for each of the envelope generators. By default, every envelope will be triggered by playing notes, but it's also possible to allow them to be activated by LFOs, ribbon gestures on the keyboard and Deluxe models, pressing a sustain pedal, and the modulation inputs. I did doubt the capabilities as had a vast artsy of synths in the past but it’s very intriguing and pulls you in Furthermore, oscillators 1 and 2 are routed into Mutators which allow you to seriously shape your sound.
