About this deal

George Smith is born in 1792 a small hillside farm in the parish of Glenlivet. He came from a long line of illicit distillers. As a young man his perseverance and determination were clear to see. However, as he stepped up to support his family. He was working as a joiner, building barns, mending fences and doing odd jobs on neighbouring farms. The ex-sherry cask aged components blended here must be very minimal. I’m more inclined to think that a small portion of ex-sherry cask-matured Glenlivet was blended in this expression, rather than it being a finish. The distillery DNA and American oak flavors are more noticeable from start to end, while he ex-sherry notes like the dates, cherries and milk chocolate are sparingly present on the nose and finish. And this continued satisfaction ensures that the single malt industry keeps growing and allows us snobs to keep enjoying the fruits of everyone else's labor. Apples, pears, hint of oak, honey, again a little floral, vanilla, caramel. But it's balanced very nicely. unchillfiltered, uncoloured and 46% ABV. For a 18 years old whisky it smells and tastes exactly how it should be - clean, smooth and mature. It is nothing

This is good whisky, but I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s better than the 12 or the 15. The dominant European oak/ex-oloroso sherry cask influence just makes it that much more different from the 12 and 15. But I can recall liking the 15 over the other 2. I guess I can only partially agree with what you said.

There are notes of chewy sultanas and Sherried peels, barley sugars and toasty cereals with petals and apple blossom. A touch of fudge and gentle wisps of smoke. NOSE: delicate, charming, deep with juicy apples wave and citrus fruits with fresh vanilla. PALATE: pretty gentle, but still medium balanced, with notes of apples, hint of honey, fruits and oak FINISH: long enough, warming, sweet fruit notes flows into tender oaky haze with enjoyable citrus hints at the very end

Adding water brings out some sharper notes on the nose. Bright orange zest comes through and dark chocolate shines through on the palate. Water thins out the body of the whisky, but brings forth more spiciness, especially nutmeg. The addition of water is interesting, but I prefer this one neat.The trade-off between body and spiciness isn't worth it to me. Glenlivet 18 year old was bit of an disappointment after my great experiences with the 12YO. It was surprisingly robust for its age, though that wasn't necessarily the key factor for disappointment. The Glenlivet 18 year old is a true masters product, well crafted and balanced. Bit low on ABV, but it's ok. Not too watery. And full of flavors: hints of sourness with orange geste, warm apples in the oven, pear and pie. Although all these components are considered to be warm, this whisky gives something fresh -almost like minty (mentol candy)… Hint of milk chocolate, hint of hidden leather. Leafy at the end. Lovely! Nose: very light caramel. The word crisp comes to mind; like the smell of a crisp apple and/or pear freshly cut. Fresh air blowing through the woods. Palet: A light candied wood flavor at first sip. There is that caramel again with some vanilla extract underneath. Very creamy. Sweet.Palate: Interesting with a cocoa / spice rub mixture dissolved in dark honey followed by roasted nuts and citrus drops. Color, Body, Aesthetic experience: Nice golden honey amber. Medium to light body. Points for age but not much else. Unfortunately only medium length too short but with a minty freshness. Few notes of plums and plums. Dryly reminiscent of wood, it lets go warm. A hint of sweet nuttiness stays a little longer. The nose is all Christmas cake, cinnamon, orange zest and toffee. The taste is intensely malty, rich butterscotch, citrus fruit, chocolate pudding and custard.

Bought as a gift, but have this whisky at home. One of my absolute favourites and a noticable step up from the 12 year old. Staff extremely courteous to deal with and delivery exactly as stated.On the nose: Very different from the 12 and 15. The aromas of red fruits are more dominant: I get light, lasting and stable aromas of cherries, dates, and sultanas, as well as Thompson & muscatel grapes, coffee, chocolate, honey and blood orange. There are subtle bursts of pineapple, orange peel and starfruit in between these–then there’s a sudden fall-off.
