About this deal

Rounds have three phases to them. First there’s a draft, where players hire cards for the round that provide building materials. Or, they can hire permanent characters to join their workforce. Next comes a worker placement phase. Spots are for the most part first-come, first-serve, but there’s a clever sting in the tail.

I absolutely loved playing Earth solo, for a game that already minimised down time, the solo mode makes it even better. You’re constantly getting new sprouts, canopies and plants and it’s great. The little trees you grow are just the best, and they score you points if they reach their maximum potential! Gaia is also a worthy opponent, you definitely need to think about your placements and fauna, or Gaia will definitely defeat you. There’s something beautiful about your finished island and Gaia’s one too. She gets trees too! And even when you lose (and it’s likely), it’s still so satisfying to see your soil powers, sprouts and flowers all working together. So you and Gaia continue to take turns until you’ve finished your island or when Gaia has gone through her cards twice. By this stage you will have developed your engines and you’ll be getting nice bonuses from all your actions, turning sprouts into compost, getting some extra soil, growing some trees, it’s just lovely. Event cards can be played at any time except in the middle of an action or ability. Played event cards are placed in a pile on the player board. Some event cards have negative score and will make the player lose points at the end of the game. The rules are very clear: events do not count for any Fauna and Ecosystem cards, except if explicitly written on the card, with a lightning icon. Score 1 point per growth piece on cards in your Tableau. If a card growth height is maxed (it has a canopy), score the points on the card instead Terrain pieces, such as bushes, stone walls, campfires, and more, can be placed on the battle map to shape your battlefield with new rules and obstacles. In Beginner Mode, there are no Ecosystem cards. Also, all players get 10 points per Fauna card objective.

Otherwise the set up is very similar to a multiplayer game, you put the little leaf tokens on the board as well as your starting island, climate and terrain, which’ll give you some of your initial scoring goals. In this initial set up, I was on Nishinoshima island (with a sunny and cloudy symbol) with a hemiboreal climate and Monteverde cloud forest ecosystem. I was trying to get as many mushrooms as possible for this ecosystem. These details are lovely, and I feel like I’m learning with a board game! I didn’t know hemiboreal was a word or that it supported a variety of deciduous plants. Zatu has an excellent range of games and for most of them the best prices too. While Earth excels in providing a strategic and immersive experience, it may not appeal to players seeking high levels of direct player interaction. Due to the focus on individual tableau building and optimizing personal strategies, interaction between players is relatively limited. Nevertheless, the captivating gameplay and intricate mechanics of Earth compensate for this aspect. Each player has an Ecosystem card and there are 2 randomly selected public Ecosystem cards. Player's ecosystem cards can only be scored by the player that owns it. Public Ecosystem cards are scored by all players. Yes, because of the special photo cards it is possible to play the game without a computer. This works as follows: If you don’t have access to internet, play the game with the photo cards. Take 8 cards and put them face up (questions down) on the table. Each round, one player (starting with the oldest player) is the quizmaster, who asks but can’t answer the questions. The quizmaster will automatically receive 2 cards at the end of each round. In the second round the next oldest player is quizmaster, et cetera. You also have the option of playing terrain cards which often lets you score extra for certain flora placements, as if you didn’t have enough to think about. You can’t hoard more than five resources at the end of a round. Your decisions now have a lasting impact on later rounds, none more so than your finances. Money, it would seem, truly is the root of all evil…

Phase II is the headline event: worker placement. Everyone puts their three Master Builder pawns into a draw-bag. The first player reveals a pawn. The owner of this Master Builder places this pawn wherever they want. These locations gain you resources, extra Craftsmen, getting cosy with King Stephen, and more. Michael Menzel’s art transports you to twelfth century England in the blink of an eye. There’s painstaking details in all fourteen locations across the board. Citizens working in the quarry, guarding the King’s Court, or busy at the cathedral evokes the mise en scène. Locations all have text descriptions – no confusing iconography, here. Teaching this part of the game is a breeze. These really were minor things for me and didn’t take away from the very satisfying feeling of completing my island and fully growing lots of little trees. Since there are soooo many cards, there are lots of different combinations of flora and fauna to explore and the replayability is great. The components are fantastic too, the player boards look great, the card art is vibrant and attractive and I’m obsessed with the tree stumps and canopies (if you couldn’t tell). An all-around beautiful production. Earth is already an excellent game and the solo mode is a great addition to it all.
