About this deal

The story of Malin’s experience is in itself a fascinating one; however, what adds even more depth to the book is the unusual and innovative structure. The sections dealing directly with Malin are often poetically and beautifully written, as she explores her emotions and feelings, wrestles with her faith and struggles to subdue her rebellious will. However, alongside this are all manner of different narratives, including extracts from her classmates’ letters and diaries, the thoughts of the adults she encounters, and some very intriguing philosophical sections. These are perhaps the most unexpected element of the book, and they include dialogues between good and evil, as well as discussions amongst diverse groups representing the viewpoints of such disparate types as theologians, humanists, doctors, aesthetes, pastors, and even a ‘woman with common sense’. These take the novel into a completely different realm, allowing Boye to examine all kinds of varying philosophies, setting them against each other and showing just how many conflicting attitudes there are to everything.

See I am rating this 3.5 Stars now because I know this book is better than what I would rate it right this moment. I was just extremely sensitive to noise and too overwhelmed by my surroundings to focus properly. People talking around and to me while reading absolutely did not help keeping me focused. Plus the fact that this book does not exist in German and the metaphorical/symbolistic language that appears so often really demands a different sot of attention from me.Rörig, kräver sin koncentration. There is some dialogue at the end of the book, a discussion about Malin's transformation that involves a lot of different people. I absolutely hated this as part of the ending because most of the participants in the discussion said how selfish and disgusting Malin is for following her "desire" instead of her beliefs. This just confirms Malin's biggest fear and thoughts throughout the novel. Whilst at high school Karin Boye joined Kristliga gymnasistföreningen (the Christian high school students’ society). Karin Maria Boye ( listen ⓘ; 26 October 1900 – 24 April 1941) [1] was a Swedish poet and novelist. In Sweden, she is acclaimed as a poet, but internationally, she is best known for the dystopian science fiction novel Kallocain (1940). The month of March marks both International Women’s Day, on 8 March, and Women’s History Month. In honour of these occasions, this blog profiles our pioneering women writers. We are very proud to have played a part in facilitating access to their work for English-speaking readers – frequently through women translators, and with cover designs by women – and can think of nothing better than inviting them all to a literary dinner party! She is perhaps most famous for her poems, of which the most well-known ought to be "Yes, of course it hurts" (Swedish: "Ja visst gör det ont") and "In motion" (Swedish: "I rörelse"). She also wrote a few novels including "Kallocain". Inspired by the rise of National Socialism in Germany, it was a portrayal of a dystopian society in the vein of Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Huxley's Brave New World (though written almost a decade before Nineteen Eighty-Four). In the novel, an idealistic scientist named Leo Kall invents Kallocain, a kind of truth serum. As Boye had resigned as editor of Spektrum she earned her living from translations and writing short stories for weekly magazines. From 1936-1938 Boye was employed as teacher at Viggbyholm school, but suffered from periods of depression and suicide attempts. Crisis by Karin Boye Initially, I wanted to read Crisis because it was mentioned and briefly discussed in the Swedish Netflix show Young Royals. For those expecting a sapphic romance novel: Crisis is not what you are looking for. A literary association dedicated to her work was created in 1983, keeping her work alive by spreading it among new readers. In 2004, one of the branches of the Uppsala University Library was named in her honour. Beyond these, there are also other parts of the novel presented in dialogue-form -- including Malin actually pitted against herself: 'Malin 1' in conversation (or rather debate) with 'Malin 2'. In 1931 Boye, together with Erik Mesterton and Josef Riwkin, founded the poetry magazine Spektrum, introducing T. S. Eliot and the Surrealists to Swedish readers. Together with the critic Erik Mesterton, she translated Eliot's "The Waste Land". She was largely responsible for translating the work of T. S. Eliot into Swedish.

Boye's 1931 novel Astarte was a criticism of the bourgeois culture, and won a Nordic novel prize. Her novel "Crisis" ( Kris) depicts her religious crisis and lesbianism. In her novels "Merit awakens" ( Merit vaknar) and "Too little" ( För lite) she explores male and female role-playing. [2] Boye here is clearly processing her younger self and what she went through -- and finding creative ways to do so. When we think of Nordic fiction nowadays, we’re probably inevitably aware of the preponderance of Scandi-crime; it not only seems to have taken over as the predominant kind of crime fiction, but has also seeped onto TV screens. However, two handsome new releases from Norvik Press (a publishing house specialising in Scandinavian literature and based in UCL’s Department of Scandinavian Studies) set out to challenge this notion. These books, from women writers of the 1930s, are ground-breaking modernist works and translated into English for the first time; and here I consider a challenging and original work from an inspiring author.
