Carcassonne is a game suitable for 2-5 players, which sees players selecting a face-down tile from the centre of the table and placing it to continue the landscape of the already-placed tiles on the table. This is the one key rule in Carcassonne. Roads must continue roads, castles must continue castles; you cannot cut off a feature. Then comes the key decision, do you place a meeple on one of the available features on that tile, that feature being anything from a road to a monastery? Or do you keep hold of your meeples and await another placement opportunity that may yield more points? Carcassonne is one of the best-known modern board games in existence. Since its release in 2000, it has sold over 10 million copies! It’s an incredibly popular tile-placement game, for one reason above all others: it’s so simple to play. Anyone can learn how to play Carcassonne. And, thanks to this tutorial, you too will have no problem teaching it at your next games night… You can always place tiles so open fields sit next to open fields. Usually, you’d stand your meeple upright on a feature to claim it as your own. But you can also lay your meeple down in a field, where it becomes a ‘farmer’. Like the other meeples, you cannot place a farmer in a pre-occupied field. Nebel über Carcassonne (Fog over Carcassonne) is a co-operative version of the well-known tile-laying game Carcassonne. Working together, you place tiles and score points while trying to stop the spread of ghosts, contain haunted ground in cemeteries, and use haunted castles to your advantage. If too many ghosts are loose on the ground or you've collected too few points when the tiles run out, you lose the game. If you do manage to survive three days, you can adjust the difficulty level of the game to increase the challenge. So, if you are no stranger to Carcassonne then you will not be at a loss here. The artwork has been done in such an interesting and clever way. All the tiles are of course usable with other editions and expansions (mostly) but the small details on the tiles are what make this game really pop. There is UV print on all the tiles and on the box cover itself, giving the game an irresistible gleam. One thing that I never realised until I played this version was how baren the Carcassonne world looked before. Now that we can see little people on the tiles all over the place, it breathes life into the game and makes it feel like a much more real city that we are building.

Many of the tiles have city walls on them. If you want, you could rotate and place this tile so that it connects to (or even completes) an earlier city segment. You cannot place this tile in a manner where it would intersect a road. Neither could you have it so the city walls don’t align with adjacent tiles. Great online store for board games. Sometimes, you might get a tile that isn’t of much use to you. All the roads have highwaymen on them. Your city tile doesn’t fit in any legal spots. Don’t worry, because there’s always a get-out clause. And, if you’re smart with your tile placement, it can be a lucrative one. Some tiles are monasteries, surrounded by fields and sometimes with a road leading out of it. Again, when placing a monastery, you must align it to fit in with the surrounding landscapes. If you place a meeple into this monastery, it becomes a ‘monk’. Monasteries are only ever one tile in size.

Did you know that the term ‘meeple’ originated in a game of Carcassonne? Shortly after Carcassonne’s release, player Alison Hansel created a portmanteau. When describing her wooden pawns, Alison blended ‘my’ and ‘people’ together –‘meeple’. The term grew in popularity and is now a worldwide term for wooden silhouette player pieces! Turns Are Easy As One, Two, Mee(ple) At the end of the game, there’s no punishment for any incomplete monasteries. They still score one point per tile surrounding them. Fields & Farmers – High Risk, High Points? I am by large impressed with this edition of a well-loved classic. However, there is always room for improvement. One thing this game is missing however is the inclusion of some expansions that many people deem as ‘essential’ to the core experience. The game would have felt much more complete if it had included at least the Inns & Cathedrals expansion that would give us scoring tiles for complete laps of the scoreboard and the larger meeple for better area control. As well as some risk and reward features. I also consider the Traders & Builders expansion to be essential as it adds reasons for people to close each other’s cities, more reason to claim fields/farmland and reasons to build bigger and bigger with the builder meeple.

The game is simple to learn but has a bit of depth to the decision making process. There should be little analysis paralysis when playing, so downtime is only due to the calm pace allowing for conversation. No bad thing when introducing new gamers to the hobby. The answer to this question is both yes and no. It depends where your level of OCD is. For me, the answer is no. For many, it is likely yes. I have included a pic for comparison (hopefully the pic is included somewhere around here) of the older tiles, specifically of one from the big box edition, and one from this edition. They are similar enough to mix the tiles together, but the added detail on the newer ones coupled with the new rounded corners, means that the older ones are apparent enough to mean mixing isn’t an option for me. I suspect we will start seeing reprints of expansions in the coming months to more closely resemble the newer tile art. The Rain on the Horizon This should be your first objective when playing this version of the game. You must try and complete (laying the closing tile) as many forests as you can and gain as many of the 16 bonus tiles as possible. These bonus tiles are extra turns and usually have a better than average points value attached with them. Lots of fish, bigger animals to hunt, or another special rule. If you get the majority of these tiles, you will have had more turns with the prospect of higher scores. My experience, particularly in 2 player games, is that whoever gets the majority of the bonus tiles usually (but not always) comes out on top. Combine Your River Network With Your Hunting Fields
