Magda, aged seventeen, stays with her mother and grandfather, hiding out in a neighbour’s attic or in the forest when the Nazi militia comes to round up friends, neighbours, and family. She escapes for a time, but eventually she too is captured and transported to the death camp.

In this book we meet three sisters who are just teenagers when the Nazis start rounding up people to send to concentration camps. Livia is the youngest, just fifteen when she?s sent to the formidable Auschwitz, and is followed by her protective older sister Cibi who is determined to stay together no matter what. Magda goes into hiding with their mother and grandfather, relying on the kindness of neighbours and surviving in the forest to elude capture. A year later, a fire breaks out in the town, and the sisters and friends convene at the Prozorov house after a long night of trying to help the victims. Olga and Natasha have an argument about the Prozorov’s elderly servant, Anfisa, whom Natasha insists is too useless to be kept around. Chebutykin comes in, terribly drunk and depressed at having caused the death of a patient the other day. He announces to everyone that Natasha is having an affair with Protopopov, though actually, the whole town knows this.

Irina, the youngest sister, is still full of expectation, speaking of going to Moscow and meeting her true love. The sisters grew up in Moscow, and they all long to return to the happiness of that time. Andrei is the only young man in the family; his sisters adore him. He falls in love with Natalia Ivanovna ("Natasha"), who is rather "common" compared to the sisters and regarded by them with disdain. The play begins on the first anniversary of the death of their father, Sergei Prozorov. At the close of the act, Andrei confesses his feelings to Natasha, and proposes. Charles L. Mohler and Kimberly A. Iroquois women mixed their crops, using a system called "interplanting." Two or three weeks after the corn was planted, the women returned to plant bean seeds in the same hills. The beans contributed nitrogen to the soil, and the cornstalks served as bean poles. Between the rows, the farmers cultivated a low-growing crop such as squash or pumpkins, the leaves of which shaded the ground, preserving moisture and inhibiting weed growth. Each of the sisters married a Holocaust survivor, with his own story of survival. Why do you think this might be?

Creative Play

The play has several important characters who are talked about frequently, but never seen onstage. These include Protopopov, head of the local Council and Natasha's lover; Vershinin's suicidal wife and two daughters; Kulygin's beloved superior the headmaster of the high school, and Natasha's children (Bobik and Sofia). JL Styan contends in his The Elements of Drama that in the last act Chekhov revised the text to show that Protopopov is the real father of Sofia: "The children are to be tended by their respective fathers" — Andrey pushes Bobik in his pram, and Protopopov sits with Sofia. The technique for planting the Three Sisters spread from Mesoamerica northward over many generations, eventually becoming widespread throughout North America. Indigenous farmers saved the best seeds for the following season, resulting in a wide variety of cultivars perfectly suited for the environments in which they were grown. Much of this diversity was sadly lost as indigenous nations were forced out of their ancestral lands by early European settlers and mainstream agricultural practices took hold.
