About this deal

It is also worth noting that the 50-degree wedge is not always included in wedge sets. Some golfers may opt for a 52-degree gap wedge instead, while others may choose to use their pitching wedge as a gap wedge and only carry a sand and lob wedge.

So I would say that you should use a 58 degree if you want more forgiveness than a 60 degree wedge. It's very small difference of 2 degrees and is more mental than anything else. But the big decider will be which gapping you use in your wedges. Bunker shots. Lower bounce on the wedge is preferred for hard bunker shots and higher bounce is preferred for fluffy and soft bunkers. If the bounce is too high on harder surfaces, the club will bounce the leading edge into the ball and you will thin it a lot. If there is not enough bounce on a wedge in soft bunkers your club will dig instead of skim as it is supposed to.PW, 50,54, 58 for me. Played the combo all last season and love it. My gaps are as follow, mainly due to groove difference between PW and 50 I have a Mizuno JPX919 Tour PW, which has a 46* loft. I plan on adding 3 more wedges to complete my set. My handicap is 8. I understand that the ideal gapping in my scenario would be 50;54;58 but I know many pros out there gap it 52;56;60 with a similar PW loft. When mixing wedge models, be aware that some wedge models have hotter faces than others. In my case, I was getting wedges to go with my X20 Tours, which stopped at PW. Cleveland CG14s were in the mix for specialty. Putter Ψ : SeeMore FGP + SuperStroke 1.0PT, 33" shaft I currently bag 46* 52* 56* 60* but I also have a 54* so I sometimes use a 46* 54* 60*. I have the extra space in my bag and happy with the top end so I tend to naturally end up with the 4 wedges.

Having both a regular 50 and a Spin-Milled 54 gives me lots of options around the greens for chipping too. If you have a pretty solid repeatable golf swing, you will expect to hit a 58 degree wedge around 80 yards with a full shot. As most players only take half swings or three quarter swings with their wedges the distances can vary from 50 to 105 yards. As a rule of thumb, the less loft there is on a wedge, the easier an average golfer will find it to hit. If you want to play a lob wedge, a 58 degree will suit you better. Wedges with 60 degrees of loft or greater are usually reserved for scratch golfers and professionals. Currently playing a 52/58 combo, but considering changing to a 50,54,58 to make a *4 gap between my PW and the rest of the wedges. Is this overkill or are people seeing a benefit? It's a good idea to start with your pitching wedge loft and work up from there. If you are noticing a yardage gap between clubs, you could look at your wedge lofts or it could be a technique issue. Either way, see a PGA pro for advice. The regular flex stepped steel shafts are known for their durability and consistency, which can help you maintain a more consistent swing and shot pattern. In their infancy, the Vokey mission was a simple one. Listen to players describe their wedge shots, and craft a wedge grind that performed exactly how the player wanted. Grind in wedges is all to do with the sole and how it sits on the ground. Grind is a highly complicated area, and if you want to know more, then you can read and watch our 'Weducation' video here. We look specifically at the Vokey SM7 wedge and go through each grind. Titleist Vokey SM8 wedges took the next innovative leap forward – Featuring a centre of gravity that is pushed forward from the face, through the use of high-density tungsten, producing a more consistent, pure strike that helps you hit your target more often.

Putter: Snake Eyes Viper Tour Sv1, 34" -or- Cleveland Huntington Beach #1, 34.5" -or- Golden Ram TW Custom, 34" -or- Rife Bimini, 34" -or- Maxfli TM-2, 35" I like this simple set up for recreational golfers as it has an even gapping to give you consistency with your short game. You actually do not need a 58 or 60 degree wedge if you're not practicing that club intensely. It will cost you more shots than help you if you do not really work at it. A 58 degree wedge is somewhere between a sand wedge and lob wedge. Due to its higher loft, a 58 degree can be used to get the ball in the air fast. It is useful out of the rough and wet bunkers. Hey everyone! I am new to this forum and I have done some digging around for similar topics but I wanted to ask the club techs what their opinion is towards the above loft sets. What Howard said is correct (of course, it's Howard), plus the gapping question is mostly prominent in gap wedge; most pros will opt for a 60 degree lob wedge rather than 58 if using 4 wedges so a 55 or 56 slots in there nicely. If they have 3 wedges in the bag they will have 6 degree gaps which will result in a 58 or 59. But otherwise, 4 degree gaps with 4 wedges I feel is way too limited in shotmaking ability around the greens - I myself opt for 5 degree gaps (46, 51, 56, 60 (because I don't want a 61 due to bounces and it being unecessary)).

Benefits of a 50-54-58 Wedge Set:

Lofts and its effect on shot making are so personal, that there really isnt a general rule for these things. If you do a "Pelz Grid", essentially about four tempo-driven swing lengths, and 4 wedge options, you get a consistent distance grid of 16 yardages, and 11-13 won't overlap. This gives you a pretty good set of choices from 125 and in. FWIW, the fitting pointed me to the T100S. Given the lofts, my choices are 48*/52*/56* or 50*/54*/58*. I wonder if I’d really miss that 60* In this article we have looked at the main differences between a 58 vs 60 degree wedge. Even though the loft difference is only two degrees, I think that average golfers find a 58 degree easier to play with from a number of different situations.
