About this deal

Myerson weaves past and future, cause and effect together, hinting at multiple versions of the same events playing out over and again. Izzy could be dead – the ice and fire motifs of the apocalypse have a certain hellish precedence. A more concrete indication of what’s really going on may have helped us here, but maybe not; as a portrait of the struggles between home, heart and head, Then is astonishingly powerful, haunting and disturbing, its occasionally frustrating sense of confusion fortifying Izzy’s sense of dislocation in the reader’s mind. Horrifyingly compelling. Every day the media bombards us with countless images of humans being awful to each other. That’s the nature of news. But we also have stories, and stories have the power to redress the balance. Not by fudging the true nature of the world our young people will inherit – that would be a betrayal. By reminding us how, alongside the people doing the worst our species is capable of, we often find other people embodying the very best.

I know her shoulder isn’t the only reason she’s crying. It’s also because of what’s happened to our parents and our friends. And because the most powerful army in the history of the world is trying to kill us. It was something I asked myself countless times during years of research and reading, and again while I was writing Then. There is no simple answer. I haven’t stopped asking the question. I can tell because they’re all wearing white armbands with a blue blob that I’m pretty sure is a Jewish star. In a time of typewriters and steam engines, Iris Winnow awaits word from her older brother, who has enlisted on the side of Enva the Skyward goddess. Alcohol abuse led to her mother’s losing her job, and Iris has dropped out of school and found work utilizing her writing skills at the Oath Gazette. Hiding the stress of her home issues behind a brave face, Iris competes for valuable assignments that may one day earn her the coveted columnist position. Her rival for the job is handsome and wealthy Roman Kitt, whose prose entrances her so much she avoids reading his articles. At home, she writes cathartic letters to her brother, never posting them but instead placing them in her wardrobe, where they vanish overnight. One day Iris receives a reply, which, along with other events, pushes her to make dramatic life decisions. Magic plays a quiet role in this story, and readers may for a time forget there is anything supernatural going on. This is more of a wartime tale of broken families, inspired youths, and higher powers using people as pawns. It flirts with clichéd tropes but also takes some startling turns. Main characters are assumed White; same-sex marriages and gender equality at the warfront appear to be the norm in this world.

Richmal Crompton isn’t holy or anything, but she’s a really good storywriter and in her books she keeps William and Violet Elizabeth and the other children safe even when they’re being extremely headstrong and cheeky. The ONLY reason I am not giving it a 5 star is because it is very, VERY depressing. The content of the story is very morbid and heartbreaking. Down the hill I see the train disappearing round the next bend. I can tell it’s another death camp train full of Jewish people. It’s got the same carriages our train had, the ones that look like big wooden boxes nailed shut. Zelda isn’t Jewish,’ I tell Richmal Crompton silently. ‘But she still needs protection because Nazis sometimes kill Catholic kids too. Specially Catholic kids who are a bit headstrong and cheeky.’

Everyone keeps saying how gripping this book is, how disturbing, how powerful but I don't quite feel this the same way. It's not so gripping that I can't put it down but it IS fascinating. It's not so disturbing that I feel upset by it - for apocalypses it's good but also a bit tame; they're cold but not freezing, they're hungry but not driven to cannibalism, their world is falling apart yet there is a lot less chaos and brutality than I would expect. Pardon the pun but for an apocalypse it's a bit cold and distracted. Nonetheless, it’s clear our politics would have turned out better if we had had more Cathy Ashtons and fewer Boris Johnsons, more constructive collaboration and less alpha male showboating. That she never aspired to a cabinet job is to her credit. The inward-looking UK press ignored her achievements and showed scant interest in European questions overall. Her memoir ends on a melancholy note. She does not discuss Brexit but points out that no other British person will lead European foreign policy, at a crucial junction for the planet. She is, alas, the first and last. And that is what makes this a truly brilliant bit of writing - the fact that it can draw these feelings, these questions, out of me - the fact that it can make me think about what all this is REALLY about...

I could not put this book down. I read it when I should have been sleeping and I read it when I should have been writing. Then we ran for our lives, me and Zelda, up a hillside as fast as we could. Which wasn’t very fast.Felix and Zelda are determined to survive and find a way to freedom, while also trying to keep their humanity and hope alive. Years ago I read about a bloke called Janusz Korczak, a Polish Jewish children’s doctor and children’s author who helped look after two hundred orphans in the second world war and along the way did some of the best things I’ve ever heard of a person doing. The Nazis killed the orphans, and Korczak chose to stay with them and was killed too. His life was one of the most inspiring examples I’d come across of the best surrounded by the worst. I wanted to honour his spirit in a story. We are the Thirteen Shirt, From Now Until the Darkness Claims, Sarah J Maas Sjm Throne of Glass ToG Manon, Novel Quote Shirt, Velaris Shirts

What I actually mean is does she want to hide, but I don’t say that either because I don’t want her to feel even more scared. With all of the current talk of nuclear exchanges between Russia and NATO, it somehow seemed appropriate to give some thought to what that might mean to those on the receiving end. We know that something bad has happened, but we aren't told exactly what. Keep collections to yourself or inspire other shoppers! Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. I know how she feels. Better to get further away from the railway line. Plus it’s almost evening and we haven’t eaten all day.
