It’s perfect if you’re looking for a KS2 fiction book to do a topic about, and would work especially well for Year 6 classes. Welcome to Cast of Thousands! Where did the idea for The Unadoptables come from, and when did you start writing it?

Sure signs that the creative wells are running dry at last, the Captain’s ninth, overstuffed outing both recycles a villain (see Book 4) and offers trendy anti-bullying wish fulfillment. Warm-hearted and mysterious The Unadoptables is a wonderfully entertaining adventure with a cast of fascinating characters set in a brilliantly evoked old-world Amsterdam and the surrounding countryside. Following the clues from the only possessions she was left with when she was abandoned as a baby and guided by her ‘Book of Theories’, the imaginative Milou leads her four friends – the least adoptable children in the very horrible Little Tulip Orphanage – to her family home where she is sure she will find her parents. Travelling through a freezing night the children arrive at their destination. But there is not the welcome they had expected. Where are Milou’s parents? And what is the mystery they need to solve? The creative ways in which the five children manage first to escape from the evil clutches of their matron and her evil accomplice Rotman and then to make a new life for themselves bamboozling neighbours and unravelling the mystery is vivid and captivating.

The Unadoptables – A book about five particular orphans at The Little Tulip Orphanage who are deemed 'unadoptable' by the matron that named them, Elinora Gassbeek. A cruel, foul woman, who is later revealed to be an orphan herself, and yet has no sympathy for the children in her care. Your story-world is really vivid and full of interesting details. How much research and world-building did you do before starting to write, and how much evolved as you went along? The experience of reading The Unadoptables feels very visual. Did you ‘see’ it as you were writing? Have films and TV dramas had any impact on your book? This was such a fun story!! The focus on family and the way the found family trope was executed was so heartwarming and I also loved how it was a mix of mystery and adventure. A must read for all MG readers! ❤ A corker of a story. I loved the writing, the setting, the STUPENDOUS action scenes, how well-paced it was, with such drama, revelations, plot twists and the loveliest of final lines... and one of the most satisfying endings I've read in a long while, with the promise of more in the epilogue. Bravo, Hana - what a book! Emma Carroll, author of Letters to the LighthouseI would be reading and all the noise and distraction from around me disappeared, that’s how good the book Unadoptables is!’ A compelling, gorgeously-written story about the power of friendship and the true meaning of family . . . perfection!" Robin Stevens, author of Murder Most Unladylike When a poison tide flowing across the ocean threatens their island, Roz works with the resident creatures to ensure that they will have clean water, but the destruction of vegetation and crowding of habitats jeopardize everyone’s survival. Brown’s tale of environmental depredation and turmoil is by turns poignant, graceful, endearing, and inspiring, with his (mostly) gentle robot protagonist at its heart. Though Roz is different from the creatures she lives with or encounters—including her son, Brightbill the goose, and his new mate, Glimmerwing—she makes connections through her versatile communication abilities and her desire to understand and help others. When Roz accidentally discovers that the replacement body given to her by Dr. Molovo is waterproof, she sets out to seek help and discovers the human-engineered source of the toxic tide. Brown’s rich descriptions of undersea landscapes, entertaining conversations between Roz and wild creatures, and concise yet powerful explanations of the effect of the poison tide on the ecology of the island are superb. Simple, spare illustrations offer just enough glimpses of Roz and her surroundings to spark the imagination. The climactic confrontation pits oceangoing mammals, seabirds, fish, and even zooplankton against hardware and technology in a nicely choreographed battle. But it is Roz’s heroism and peacemaking that save the day.

Unfolding with the clarity of a fairy tale, this sure-footed debut casts a delightfully spooky spell - Kirkus But Milou and her gang can’t wait any longer – there’s a decidedly dastardly looking man who’s arrived to adopt them, and it doesn’t look like he’s the type to want to welcome the orphans into a loving family home. If Milou wants to find her real parents, they’re going to have to run away – and Milou’s going to have to come face to face with her own destiny a lot sooner than she thought… If you've seen my RTC post, you'd know this was rated 3.5/5 at first, rounded up to 4 because GR still doesn't allow us half stars. Pretty soon after I'd already decided to round it down to 3. And a bit later still, while I was writing out this review in my head, I realized there really isn't a lot I liked about this book, and a lot that I didn't, so the rating went down further. I rounded it down to show the issues. 3 stars isn't a good rating for me, personally, but for a lot it's still okay. So it's rounded down to 2.When Milou discovers the orphanage matron's plot to sell her and her friends to a nefarious figure, she hatches an escape plan. Using only the clues left with her as a baby (a coffin-shaped basket, a cat puppet, a velvet dress), Milou and her friends dive headlong into a new adventure outside the orphanage's walls. The Unadoptables has everything: evil ship captains, lifelike puppets, a charming Dutch setting complete with windmills and canals, a ragtag group of orphans looking for a family, and a mystery at the heart of it all. Perfect for reading out loud, and just the right amount of scary, this has the feel of a classic in the making. Bethany Strout, Tattered Cover Bookstore Swept into the bright hustle and bustle of New York, Lily, Robert and Malkin discover shadowy secrets lie beneath its surface. For there are chilling goings-on in their hotel… I have been thinking a lot about this book and its unfortunate title. I am the mother of two adopted children, and neither of them, 16 year old and 11 year old, want to read this book due to the title. My husband hates the title. And I remember how much I hated it when I was handed a review ARC initially. I realized that it was trying to reclaim the word, that "unadoptable" should always be in ironic quote marks. I moved past it to read the story which is about how the children are lovable and absolutely adoptable. The impact on adopted children, however, is telling about how successful that is. It isn't.
