About this deal

Unlike mute Sooty, Sweep squeaked, aptly like a dog toy. He too relied on Harry to translate his single-note squeaks to the audience. Sweep – A grey male dog, and Sooty's best friend, who was created in 1957. [4] His trademark voice of bizarre squeaks was achieved by his original puppeteer Leslie Corbett, through a reed from a saxophone in his mouth to create the sounds. According to the Sooty & Co. episode Sooty's Magic Solutions, Sweep suffers from nyctophobia, the fear of the dark. His talents extended to making and repairing sets, as well as creating and painting both scenery and props. He also wrote a number of scripts, appeared as an extra and composed some of the music for the show – as Sooty would say: Izzy Wizzy, let’s get busy!

It doesn't sound like high entertainment but children's TV in the 1950s was in its infancy – and usually much worse. He and his wife Sallie moved to a retirement village near Horsham, West Sussex, after his battle with coronavirus. Sure enough, there was an episode of The Sooty Show filmed in Heaton Park in 1992 so our memories did not deceive us. On 18th December 1998, Sweep made a special appearance on the Channel 4 programme The Harry Hill Show. After leaving the show briefly in 1985, Mr Jago rejoined in 1993 and worked there until he retired in the early 2000s.Brenda Longman (1981–1992) – The second voice of Soo starting from the second series of the format change, following Marjorie's retirement from the role, who also made frequent guest appearances as various characters within the show's sitcom format. Longman remained with the programme until its conclusion and continued to work with Matthew and his successor Richard Cadell on subsequent sequels of The Sooty Show and other Sooty productions in the same role. From his magic wand to his water pistol, Sooty has been a children’s favourite for almost 70 years. Now original puppets of Sooty, Sweep and Soo used in the TV shows and on stage will feature in Ewbank’s Entertainment Memorabilia auction on November 18. Ramsbottom – A brown male snake who spoke in a deep Yorkshire accent and had the habit of telling convoluted stories and ditties. The character was created by Harry Corbett but retired by his son Matthew. He was originally voiced by Bill Garrett, the company model and prop maker who used his own strong Yorkshire accent and made the original puppet. Sooty didn't speak and relied on his creator and puppeteer Harry Corbett to relay his messages to the audience. In 2009, Sweep along with Sooty and Soo appeared in Peter Kay's Animated All Star Band music video on "Children in Need".

Matthew Corbett, already well known for his appearances as a presenter and singer on the children’s TV programme Rainbow, took over the reins in the mid 1970s from his father Harry, who had created Sooty almost thirty years earlier. First aired in 1952, Sooty remains the longest running children’s TV show, according to Guinness World Records. He also wrote a number of scripts, appeared as an extra and composed some of the music for the show. Corbett ran the programme mostly within a sketch-based format throughout his era, later creating the characters of Sweep and Soo to accompany the show. His most notable contribution to the show, aside from the puppet characters, was the catchphrase he used to conclude an episode's run, which would continue to be used by his successors – "Bye bye, everybody. Bye bye." Harry returned to the programme as a guest star during his son Matthew's era, and was knighted with an OBE for his contributions with the programme and characters following his retirement. On Tuesday April 9th, 2013, Sweep along with Sooty and Soo appeared as the judging panel in one episode of "The Matt Lucas Awards" Season 2. It was on this show that Sweep gave us his excruciating impression of Pavarotti, which he had previously dreamed of doing in the Sooty & Co. episode "Stars in Their Eyes" on the 1990's talent show with the same name. This is a charming consignment from a talented man who devoted much of his professional life to keeping the Sooty flame alive for generations of children,” said Ewbank’s specialist Alastair McCrea. As can be seen from his long association with the show, Peter Jago was held in high esteem by those he worked with. They come from the estate of the late Peter Jago (1946-2016), who first worked with the show in 1976 as stage manager, going on to become production manager and then one of the main puppeteers.

He started off as a stage and production manager before becoming one of the show's main puppeteers when he operated Sweep's voice.
