About this deal

Questions for Philosophical Discussion » Summary The Paper Bag Princess turns traditional fairy tales on their heads to raise questions about gender roles, identity, and happiness. Either way once the glue on our paper bags had dried she had a really good time making a puppet show with them as they battled the zombie my son had made.

She was really pleased that I chose to copy her princess craft for kids and share it here too – apparently my one is the queen and her’s is the princess. The Paper Bag Princess was first told at the Bay Area Childcare Center in Coos Bay Oregon where I had a job in 1973 and 1974. I had been telling lots and lots of dragon stories. They were all fairly regular dragon stories where the prince saves the princess from the dragon. All in all, “The Paper Bag Princess” is a brilliant book from the famous Munsch/Martchenko duo as it shows that true courage will always win the day. Although I would have preferred the ending to be a little longer so that way it would be more satisfying just knowing what happened to each character after the adventure is over, this was not a major con for me, so I would still recommend this book to children ages four and up, but because of the dragon scenes, I think children ages five and older might stand those scenes better and the children ages four and up will like the simplistic writing of this book. Elizabeth doesn't stand for this and responds by telling him that he is pretty and a prince, but a "bum". It then ends with an illustration of Elizabeth running off into the sunset with glee since they did not get married after that. While the frame of a house includes a number of basic elements, such as the foundation, the floors, the walls, and the roof, stories generally include five key elements: the characters (who the story is about), the setting (where the story takes place), the problem, the actions that occur to solve the problem and the resolution (how the problem is solved and what happens in the end). To remember what these key parts of the story are, we use the acronym CSPAR.

Narra una historia sencilla de como una princesa se embarca en una aventura para rescatar al príncipe del que esta enamorada, de las garras de un furioso dragon. Violence isn't graphic, but the dragon does breathe fire, burns down forests, and leaves a trail of horse bones; very appropriate to a fairy tale but may be upsetting to younger kids. Lessons in humility can be taught/discussed. Elizabeth used the dragon's vanity to overcome him. This could be used in a character education lesson to talk about humility as well as courage. Write dialogue between Elizabeth and Ronald before the story starts. What do you think they would say to each other? But I so hated the way the Paper Bag Princess defeats the dragon! I thought it was intolerably misguiding for a book that's intended for children.
