The Nikon Coolpix L840 is a superzoom bridge camera with a focus on value. Its main selling point is its 38x optical zoom range, which improves on the 34x lens in the outgoing L830. The new camera also gets built-in Wi-Fi with NFC pairing and 1080p Full HD video recording. The COOLPIX L840’s built-in pop-up flash is activated by pressing a button on the left of the body just below the flash housing. It has four modes, Auto, Auto with red-eye reduction, Fill flash and slow sync. The Flash has a quoted range of 6.5 meters, that’s a reduction from nine meters on the earlier model. It’s always good to see new models with an increased zoom range, the question is has Nikon increased it enough? The additional 4x is all at the telephoto end of the range so the 22.5mm wide angle remains as before and the maximum telephoto focal length increases from 765mm to 855mm equivalent. The COOLPIX L840 is a bit bigger all around than the version it replaces, and it weighs just a tiny bit longer. Factor at the four AA batteries along with a card and you are carrying 538 g. Therefore, if you’re searching for something which’s light and compact, the L840 is not it. It is a small little smaller than the PowerShot SX530 HS. However, it weighs almost a hundred g (three and a half oz ) more. Aside from incorporating Wi-Fi connectivity using NFC pairing for simple picture sharing and remote camera control, the L840 is much the same as the incoming L830. Both cameras share the identical 16-megapixel resolution, although the new version expands the sensitivity variety just one cease to ISO6400. Full HD 1080p movie recording with stereo audio can be present, and also the L840 will take full-resolution stills in 7.4fps. It’s a similar story in low light, though focussing is usually still fairly rapid. The lens will focus as close as 1cm from your subject for macro shots. This looks like an across the board decision from Nikon which has done the same thing on its S9900 compact super-zoom and I think it’s a mistake. Slow motion HD video is a popular feature and to for Nikon to drop it while retaining the double speed option is, frankly, a bit baffling. About the only saving grace is that there’s a low resolution slomo mode. I should also point out that neither the PowerShot SX530 HS nor the SX410 IS has any kind of slow motion video feature.

The L840’s 38x zoom lens achieves a maximum wide-angle focal length equivalent to 22.5mm, and is capable of a telephoto reach of 855mm (in 35mm-camra terms). The Nikon Coolpix L840 has seven sensitivity settings ranging from ISO125 to ISO6400 at full resolution. The L840’s bulky design with its large rubberised grip and rear thumb rest gives you plenty to grip on to, though those with larger fingers may find the gap between the hand grip and lens barrel slightly narrow. The COOLPIX L840 has optical image stabilisation which Nikon calls Vibration Reduction or VR. This moves the lens elements to compensate for camera movement and reduce the chances of blurred photos due to camera shake at slow shutter speeds. Nikon still hasn’t added an electronic viewfinder, but the L840’s 3” LCD monitor has a high 921k-dot resolution and wide viewing angles. It’s also tiltable up or down by 90° for easier high or low-angle shot composition, though it can’t be rotated 180° for selfie snapping. To test the COOLPIX L830’s stabilisation I set it to Auto exposure mode, zoomed the lens to its maximum telephoto setting and took a series of shots in deteriorating light at progressively slower shutter speeds, first with Vibration reduction set to off and then with it on. As you can see from the crops above, the COOLPIX L840 can produce blur-free shots down to 1/50th at the maximum zoom range, four stops slower than the photographer’s ‘one over the focal length’ dictum suggests is safe.
