One obvious indication that the 112 is a budget device is the video resolution it uses for recording. Where the 512GW boasts 1440p resolution, the 112 drops right down to 720p – 1280 x 720 pixels. This is basically a quarter as many pixels, so you won’t get anywhere near the detail, even under the best of conditions. Low light performance isn’t particularly impressive either. Unless you are driving in very well-lit night conditions, you probably won’t be able to make out much detail. If you find you need to position the 112 pointing up from the mount at the bottom of your windscreen rather than hanging down from the top, it’s possible to rotate the display by 180 degrees. However, the buttons that were below the screen will now be on the top, which might be a little confusing.

But when we tried it for ourselves, the dash cam we tested was a complete letdown, failing to recognise movement even at the highest sensitivity level. Thanks to its lowly 720p video resolution, the 112 doesn’t deliver video quality at anything like the level of its 512GW sibling. Not surprisingly, the detail is very noticeably less, and although you can make out large text, you can’t read number plates unless viewed at close proximity and low speed. The Nextbase 112 features a G-force sensor that's meant to save a video clip when the camera detects a crash. If the Dash Cam does not appear as a drive on your PC, please press the reset button on the underside of your Dash Cam and try all the USB ports on your computer. You can tinker a little with the auto-exposure settings, switch audio recording on or off and even input your licence plate number that is watermarked onto the camera’s footage. All of these are quite neat, if simplistic – far more than you might expect from a device of this price. It means that, unfortunately, you may find yourself unable to use a GPS alongside the camera as these tend to utilise the same port to power themselves. However, if you’re someone who uses a smartphone to navigate anyway, this won’t be an issue. Overall, it’s very easy to set this device up, and the design is both functional and logical.
