The diminutive GX85 (GX80 in some territories) has an older 16MP Micro-Four-thirds sensor, but still takes top-quality images and can also shoot 4K video. If it's mainly video rather than stills that you're looking for from a compact camera, then the SonyZV-1 is the best option around. Not that it isn't also very capable at shooting still photos – it has the same sensor and processor as Sony's latest RX100 series cameras, after all –but the ZV-1's main strength are its video powers. We test DSLR and mirrorless cameras both in real-world shooting scenarios and in carefully controlled lab conditions. Our lab tests measure resolution, dynamic range, and signal-to-noise ratio. Resolution is measured using ISO resolution charts, dynamic range is measured using DxO Analyzer test equipment and DxO Analyzer is also used for noise analysis across the camera's ISO range. The only thing to keep in mind is the cost of the film. Polaroid i-Type film can be a little costly, so this camera is best suited to older children who can pace their shots. The Sony RX1 RII offers most of the functions of a high-end Sony camera that you’d expect – tilting LCD screen (though no touchscreen), good NFC and WiFi connectivity, decent electronic viewfinder (that retracts into the body when not in use), customisable dials/buttons and a dedicated exposure compensation dial. Incidentally, if the Sony RX1 RII is the Ferrari of full-frame compact cameras, the Leica Q2, which we discuss below, is the Rolls Royce…) Our testing found image quality to be much improved, partly thanks to a redesigned lens, and the low-light performance to be better. One of our main complaints with the X100F was that its photos tended to be soft at f/2. Not so much with X100V, as we found it to offer great sharpness in the centre, even at the widest apertures. Then there’s the higher resolution hybrid viewfinder – both optical and electronic – as well as support for 4K/30p video capture.The ZS100 / TZ100 remains a solid middle ground between premium compact cameras with larger sensors (in this case, a 1-inch sensor) and super-zoom models with smartphone-beating reach. Its 10x zoom might now be matched by some smartphones, but in our tests the quality of this camera's lens and image processing produced vibrant, punchy photos with excellent detail. If you're looking to get high-quality images with minimal baked-in processing, then the ZS100 / TZ100 will serve you well and offer a more enjoyable photographic experience than any glass slab. The improvement in this area has been dramatic and makes shooting my fast-moving kids as easy as cake – much easier than with my clunky DSLR camera. So what don’t I like about it? Well, the battery life could be better (I got 280 shots per charge), and I do wish the touchscreen flipped… but then again, that would probably ruin the overall design. Ask any street photographer worth their salt to name two camera brands synonymous with capturing some up-close pavement action, and their answers will include: one expensive German brand… and Ricoh. Not Ricoh in general, either, but the Ricoh GR series.

This is one of the features that make the Ricoh GRIII so well-suited to street photography. Sure, you can ‘zone focus’ using any camera, but with this one, you essentially have a zone-focusing system and a regular auto-focusing system in one shutter button – ingenious! The menu system is also simple and easy to navigate, granting access to a range of different filters and effects for photos, videos and voice recordings. There’s even a selection of built-in games.
The ZS80 / TZ95 can shoot 4K video at 30fps, while 10fps burst shooting is decent for a compact. Focusing is similarly speedy, with great face detection. During our time with it, we found the image quality to be generally reasonable. There was some softness around the edge of the frame at 24mm. The included 18-55mm kit lens zooms from wide angle to short telephoto, allowing it to cover landscapes, portraits and everything in between. There’s also built-in image stabilisation to reduce camera shake and smooth out videos. The X-E4 is Fujifilm’s smallest interchangeable-lens camera with a viewfinder. It’s tiny! Really, though, it’s not all that much more compact than the X-T30 or especially the X-E3, but it is slightly smaller nonetheless. It’s pretty darn lightweight, too. This is why I bought the camera: I wanted a smaller and lighter option for travel, and the X-E4 fulfills that nicely. With dial-led controls, superb images straight out of the camera, and new extra features like optional converters for altering the lens’s field of view, the X100V is the best version of this camera yet. In our review, we appreciated the new, sharper lens that makes images from the X100V even better, as well as the improved autofocus that makes it really feel like a modern camera, without losing that retro shooting approach.

You want flexibility: As a fixed lens compact, you can't zoom in out or out for a different field of view from its 35mm focal length. You rely on a touch screen: The function of the touch screen is limited, with no support for menu navigation. There's still nothing quite like instant film for sharing moments and cherishing them for years to come. Seeing the photo appear on paper, keeping it, or giving it away – aah, that’s the stuff. If you’re looking for a starting point, there’s no better camera than the Fujifilm Instax Mini 11. Speaking of aperture, the only slight disappointment is the variable aperture of f/2.8~4.5. This camera is not weather-sealed, and there’s no IBIS, which will certainly cause complaints, yet the X-E4 is a wonderful camera that is well-built and well-designed—a solid offering by Fujifilm, no doubt—but it’s not a premium model, so expectations should be kept reasonable. Replacing the three-year-old Mini 9, the Mini 11 waslaunched in 2020. Designimprovements include auto exposure with a variable shutter speed, plus a built-in adjustable lens with a close-up setting, which is ideal for selfie shots. In short, there'll be far fewer wasted prints, which is good news considering those costs can add up.

It really is in a class of its own, literally nothing like the other cameras on this list– for better or worse, you simply can’t compare it. So, we’re reaching the end of the article, and have I really left the best premium compact camera until last?! The Canon Rebel T7 (EOS 2000D in some territories) is pretty old and nothing special in terms of specs - it has a fixed rear screen, only shoots full HD video, and it doesn't come with Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF for faster focusing in live view.But fewer features means it's easier to get to grips with the basics, and this camera will still let you take control of your photography, which matters way more than extra megapixels or tilting screens. The downsides include a small and relatively low-res viewfinder, plus a fixed touchscreen. These are symptoms of this camera's age, but a small EVF is still better than no viewfinder when you're shooting in sunny conditions, and this camera otherwise offers modern conveniences like 10fps burst shooting, 4K video shooting and built-in Wi-Fi.You want to push a camera hard: The Q3 has some seriously impressive features, but they work best when in moderate, everyday use. I have had no issues holding the camera, so I have no plans to use those. I might be in the minority with this opinion, but I actually prefer the flat design; however, some people won’t like it, and this might be a reason to avoid the X-E4, depending on your preferences. Raw image quality is also quite impressive, with a decent amount of dynamic range from the GRIII’s new APS-C sensor. It’s definitely a step up from the GRII, as the 8 additional megapixels not only make the images sharper, they give you additional cropping ability as well.
