About this deal

Gorgeously romantic, as well as a story about friendship and grief and loss; I never wanted it to end’ BETH O’LEARY Eve, Justin, Susie, and Ed have been friends since they were teenagers. Now in their thirties, the four are as close as ever, Thursday night bar trivia is sacred, and Eve is still secretly in love with Ed. Maybe she should have moved on by now, but she can’t stop thinking about what could have been. And she knows Ed still thinks about it, too.

Between Us: The biggest rom com of 2023: smart, romantic and

The writing was engrossing, with some great moments of humour, and I adored getting to know Eve and her friends. So, these books are not romance per se, but there is a romance that is the heart of the story and is HEAVILY EARNED!!! Maybe not everyone feels that way but I do! Also as someone that grew up with a core friend group and also still has a smaller version of the group with the same friends today (with lots of drama yay) you can imagine I find literally every aspect of her writing engaging and perfectly tailored for me.I liked that in this story, neither of the main characters were filthy rich or famous: just two ordinary folk who were the victim of Joe's highly narcissistic machinations! Mhairi McFarlane is an internationally bestselling English author of humor, literature and fiction books. Born in Falkirk, Scotland, she schooled in Nottingham and advanced her studies at Manchester University where she graduated with a degree in English Literature. She made a return to Nottingham to delight the natives with her journalism. After roles as a feature writer, trainee reporter, reporter and columnist, Mhairi discovered that it was time to write a novel. And I think that basically sums up the state of the whole experience. I just wanted more. More laughs, more heart, more things to cry over, more sizzle. I wanted to feel a whole lot of things, because I'm used to feeling a whole lot of things, and -- barring maybe two moments -- in the end I didn’t feel much of anything. Tragedy is an early catalyst, but it also brings Finlay into the picture and what a welcome addition his character makes to this story! Like Hester, he's an imposter with the ability to stir things up and shift relationships around. Judged for his remoteness and harmed by malicious gossip, Finlay is an enigma that begs to be solved. It's hard though not to be drawn to this fascinating and complex and beautiful man. He also though represents what I've noticed in recent McFarlane books, which is the juxtaposing of two romantic choices for the heroine in what is very helpfully called in this book, the "Nicest Guy in the Room Act." Finlay is complicated and ambiguous, but are those qualities that make for an enduring, committed love? Ed, on the other hand, is a good guy, dutiful and responsible, but like other good guys in McFarlane's worlds, he is weak, faintly misogynistic, and passive in his love for Eve. I've come to search for the wolf in good guy clothes in this author's works, and I wasn't disappointed here. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say it's Eve growing after a personal loss, and reconsidering truths she's believed for 16 years. And it's a lovely journey. Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy.

No spoilers here for readers, but have some tissues standing by people. I cried a bit. With the world the way it is and for some of us who lost people due to COVID or other things this past year, this book will slap you in the feels. It goes into a lot of things I think which will cause you to stop and think. McFarlane walks you through first love, unrequited love, death, loss of parents, and even new love.

It just goes to show that you never really know someone, or that you can't know everything. Equally, there are reasons you shouldn't know everything.

And I don't want to give anything away, and spoiler-tagging wouldn't really be adequate (it'd be either too much or too little). So I think I'll stop there more-or-less. I'll say that I was perfectly satisfied with the resolution of this story on all levels. Eve's personal growth is outstanding, but so is the growth in her friends. The romantic fall-out was everything it needed to be. In short, it came together strongly in every way I was aware of. So yeah, all the stars. Many of us have stood in Roisin's shoes at some point in our lives. We take as gospel truth everything our partners or loved ones tell us, only to have the rug pulled out from under us when we discover that we've been handed the booby prize behind door number 3 in the Game Show of Life. Just Last Night" follows 30 something Eve and her three friends, Ed, Susie, and Justin, at their regular Thursday quiz night. Eve finds herself thinking of her ex, who has immigrated to America and is now married with a child. She starts to wonder again about her almost relationship with Ed and what could have been. When Ed's longtime girlfriend pops up and crashes their night, it sets in motion things that are going to change the group of four forever. And Matt, well it was lovely to just have my heart warmed any time that he was with Roisin, as you could tell that, despite how Joe was trying to depict him, he was genuinely a nice guy. First off, thank you NetGalley and Avon and Harper Voyager for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.Who's That Girl?" is a charming romance novel that tells the story of Edie, a young adult girl whose life takes an unexpected turn when she is caught in a compromising situation at a wedding. As she navigates the aftermath, she meets the author Elliot Owen. Together, they embark on a journey of love, self-discovery, and redemption. It's a captivating read that explores themes of life, love, and the power of second chances. At least I easily got into the story, enjoying the friendship drama, self-growth, and second chances theme. I had higher expectations for this book as a devoted fan of Mhairi McFarlane, but don't get me wrong, I still devoured it and enjoyed her brilliant writing style. This book delves into gaslighting, exploring dysfunctional and manipulative relationship patterns that blend into emotionally consuming family dynamics.

Brilliant on relationships, friendships and emotions… I loved, loved, loved this book’ MARIAN KEYES Having the friend group meet while working in Waterstones was also such a nice touch, as a book lover. Kimster, Fran, Jess& Franlopedia - I am excite and have no idea what this is about other than yay alternate timelines storytelling 🙃

after the hiccup with my first MM book and learning to go into her novels not expecting romance, this was a completely different experience, and one for the better. Between Us introduces the reader to uber-cool protagonist Roisin, her partner Joe, and the rest of the self-proclaimed Brian Club (Meredith, Gina, Matt & Dev) who have been besties for the better part of a decade. Speaking of Joe, I liked that as readers we knew something wasn't adding up about his behaviour but you didn't know exactly what he was up to. Having him be a TV writer where it appeared that he'd allowed life to inspire his work, was really interesting too and I was just waiting for him to be found out and called out by Roisin. As the group head out on a celebratory weekend away; tensions soar and relationships halt as incidents give cause to create a rift between them. At the center is Joe's latest crime drama, where the first episode seems to mirror actual events, causing Roisin to question her own reality. So I obviously thought "Omg friends to lovers with maybe an unrequited crush but now we find out both love each other"
