The movie’s version of the charter boat captain Quint is among the most indelible characters in cinematic history. Book-Quint is terrible, a foul-mouthed, one-dimensional old salt who is more of a hustler chasing green than an Ahab chasing a creature from the deep. This is important, because the endgame of both book and novel resolve around Brody, Quint, and Hooper sharing a small boat on the big sea. Benchley’s inability to find any interesting interactions between the three men keeps the book from reaching any dramatic climax. (The book’s only climax occurs when…oh, never mind). Instead, the story drags and sputters on a downward course, until it staggers to an abrupt and entirely unfulfilling end. Wood, Robin (June 28, 2002). "Peter Benchley's 'Shark Trouble' ". CBS News. CBS Interactive Inc. So exciting - every chapter, every character, everything about this book (maybe not the little shark part). We could see the fear it was stirring up. It was horrifying.’ Chewing on the complex legacy of Jaws a b Stratton, Jean (April 2, 2008). "After Nine Years on Borough Council, Wendy Benchley Sets New Agenda". Town Topics. Vol.62, no.14. Princeton's Weekly Community . Retrieved May 12, 2018. Peter Benchley describes in graphic details what this fish does on the next pass. Politics fuel this story and readers get to see the struggles between the town council and Sheriff Martin Brody as the debate about public safety and commerce heats up. If the local town beach is closed down, the town dies with it, but if the beaches are open, then someone must die, and that is a chance that the council feels they have to take. Shortly before the book went to press, Benchley and Congdon needed to choose a title. Benchley had many working titles during development, many of which he calls "pretentious", such as The Stillness in the Water and Leviathan Rising. Benchley regarded other ideas, such as The Jaws of Death and The Jaws of Leviathan, as "melodramatic, weird or pretentious". [3] Congdon and Benchley brainstormed about the title frequently, with the writer estimating about 125 ideas raised. [8] The novel still did not have a title until twenty minutes before production of the book. The writer discussed the problem with editor Tom Congdon at a restaurant in New York:

Benchley has no use for this pared-down – albeit highly effectual – narrative arc. Instead, after the initial onslaught, the storyline sort of wanders away. Chief Brody, Amity’s top cop, starts to lose the thread of his case. Instead of worrying incessantly about the shark, he becomes preoccupied by Mayor Larry Vaughn, and Vaughn’s secretive business dealings. Meanwhile, Brody’s wife, Ellen, is having a hell of a life crisis. Born wealthy, she went slumming to marry Brody, and now, three kids later, she is starting to regret her decision. When young Woods Hole oceanographer Matt Hooper – a trust funder himself – comes to town, Ellen’s eyes start to wander. The author has also created subplots that explain in detail the special interest that controls the decision making of the town council. However, these subplots are not included in the movie version of the book. Wendy Benchley agrees. “I have seen tremendous changes in attitudes over the past 50 years. Peter received thousands of letters over the years from people around the world telling him that Jaws had inspired them to learn more about sharks and the ocean. i am just here to declare that this is a pretty fun book. i read it in a single day, during all of the previous year's shark week reruns counting down to SHARK WEEK 2018, and my very low expectations of entertainment were met and SURPASSED. Wendy is globally recognised as a leader in ocean and shark conservation, and her experience will be massively valuable to our growth plans,” Dr. Austin Gallagher, CEO and Chief Scientist, writes. “The word ‘shark’ is synonymous with the name ‘Benchley’.” First published in 1974, Jawsby Peter Benchley is a riveting novel of suspense and horror that terrified millions of readers and inspired an iconic film franchise.

Quaint ocean-side village, dependent on summer tourism dollars, is terrorized by a killer Great White Shark. A cop, a marine biologist, and an obsessed fisherman go out to stop it. A solid gold story. He was also one of the founding board members of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI). This only marks the start of their adventure as the couple work with the local light housekeeper to find as many of these vials before they land into the wrong hands.

Following the aggressive campaign of the original, publicity for the sequels skilfully capitalised on the public's fear in the guise of myth-busting.
