About this deal

I read a lot of crime, serial killer chillers, psychological thrillers and horror but I also branch out into women's fiction and things on the lighter side to break from the darkness and Lisa `Jewell never lets me down ever. A great book with an ending you may not be expecting. 5 stars from me. After texting that he was on his way home from work, Carl didn't return, and has been incommunicado ever since. Lily makes a missing persons report, but the police are rather indifferent until they discover that Carl's passport is a fake. Before they ever speak, Gray has a decidedly negative impression of Mark. His family chalks it up to jealousy and possessiveness. How big a role do you think those biases played in shaping Gray’s apprehension around Mark? Is it possible to determine when you should trust your instincts and when you are being unfairly prejudicial? How might you tell the difference? Frank” suffers from a type of amnesia referred to as dissociative amnesia. Real life cases of amnesia are rare, but they do occur. As a group, consider learning about some of them and the mystery and suspicion surrounding this phenomenon. For example, you could read news articles about “Benjamin Kyle,” whose true identity was discovered in 2015 using DNA testing after eleven years of investigating. Or, you could listen to the story of Jeff Ingram on NPR’s StoryCorps series at NPR.org/2012/12/14/167187734/for-man-with-amnesia-love-repeats-itself. Write a scene from the perspective of Mark, either from his time with Gray and Kirsty, or later in life with his Aunt Kitty or with Lily. How does he see himself? Does he care about the women in his life? What are his motivations? Does he attribute any of his behavior to the childhood abuse he suffered? If you’re choosing to write from a later perspective—how has he changed since his teenage years? Does he believe his own lies? Consider any of these questions, and share your writing with your reading group.

You think you know what the link is between the characters, don't be so sure, there are so many twists and turns this novel will have you guessing to the end. Still, when Alice sees a forlorn rain-soaked man sitting on the beach near her house, she can't help but offer assistance. The man - who's nice-looking and well-dressed - has amnesia, and Alice offers him a temporary home in her guest cottage while they try to unravel his identity. Elsewhere in urban London, the newly married Lily Monrose is worried about her husband who didn’t return home from work. And as per the police, her husband never existed. There will be tendencies to compare this book to The Girl On The Train and its various imitators, but don’t be fooled: This is better than those. Jewell’s forte is the good old-fashioned novel of psychological suspense, the kind that keeps you reading deep into the night.” Lydia, despite being rich and accomplished, is still haunted by a distressing childhood; Dean is a jobless single father without a promising future; while eighteen year old Robyn, who is smart and popular, has just joined college with dreams of becoming a pediatrician. She is however performing dismally in class and is also getting to know what it means to fall in love for the very first time. Lily and Carl have been married for a few weeks and are deeply in love. Lily's waiting for him to come home from work in London, but he's later than usual. Carl met her on business in Ukraine and married her within a week, bringing her home with him to England, where she knows not a single soul. He's got a mother they spoke with on the phone once, shortly after the wedding, but she's not met any of his family or friends. She's about 20 and he's in his early 40s. When he's late, she gets the cops involved, and after their initial day of research, the cops tell her the man does not exist and must be using a fake name. They begin to search for him with whatever little information they have available. Lily has only been married a few weeks when her husband simply vanishes into thin air. Being in a new country, having never met her husband’s family face to face, having no friends to call, Lily’s search for the truth is daunting. Finally, able to enlist some help, Lily is baffled by what she discovers about her new husband.

Decades later, in her thirty-something, Melody lives in a London council flat with her teenage son.
