Portrait at very top of Lister from Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council; Supplied by The Public Catalogue Foundation. I reference Liddington’s work here particularly because the biographer wrote this book without ever having read Anne Lister’s diaries for herself. She is entirely reliant upon secondary sources. The book is basically a recap of Helena Whitbread’s and Jill Liddington’s works, with some additional references to Lister’s letters and correspondence thrown in. Plus a LOT of editorializing - in addition to the steaming piles of judgement, the biographer regularly states her own interpretation as though it’s proven fact. And it’s interpretation based often on extremely thin evidence. Throughout her life, Lister had a strong Anglican faith, [19] and also remained a Tory, "interested in defending the privileges of the land-owning aristocracy". [20] Travel [ edit ] Watercolour portrait of Lister, probably by a Mrs Turner of Halifax, 1822 After selecting a pair of rings, they took communion together on Easter Sunday, 1834, at the Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate in York. So far as Lister and Walker were concerned, the shared Easter service was their stand-in wedding ceremony. They never mentioned this to the church, and their marriage went unrecognized in the eyes of the law. But if you visit the house of worship today, you’ll find a rainbow-ringed plaque that reads, “ Anne Lister 1791-1840 of Shibden Hall, Halifax Lesbian and Diarist; took sacrament here to seal her union with Ann Walker [on] Easter 1834.” 7. an angry mob once burned effigies of lister and walker . The book was independently published on 19 May 2020. A revised second edition was published in 2021.

It’s fitting that, at last, she’s receiving recognition. Her incredible diaries amount to over 5 million words and now have UNESCO status as a world heritage document. They provide a meticulous account of the minutiae of her life and activities and as such are a valuable social history resource. a b c "The life and loves of Shibden Hall's Anne Lister". Lister seems to have had quite a number of female lovers before settling down with Walker; she talked quite openly about her preferences with women who did not necessarily share them but were fascinated to understand.

Anne Lister was a number of things. She was, I quote, "the first modern lesbian". There is a plaque in Shibden Hall and another one outside the church where she had a secret (and obviously informal) wedding ceremony with Ann Walker whom she considered her wife. She was an entrepreneur with a head for (manageable) risk who competed with men on an equal basis. She refused to be patronised or sidelined by men. And she refused the advice of her girlfriends to find a man, become respectable in the eyes of society and do what she liked in secret. Anne Lister would have none of that. She knew what she wanted: she wanted a companion, a wife, with whom she would live together. She found that in nearby heiress Ann Walker. That said, if you're new to the topic, the first thing you should know about Anne Lister books is to NEVER FORGET you're reading (or watching!) someone's INTERPRETATION of Anne Lister. All biographers and researchers of Anne Lister lay a heavy hand on their works in determining what they think you should know about her or how they want to present her based on their own feelings about her. (For example, Steidele says at the very end that she fell in love with Anne only to be betrayed by Anne. I strongly believe that means she wasn't paying attention to the real Anne all along.) Lister's diaries have been described as part of a "trilogy of early 19th century diaries" by local women, covering the same period from different perspectives, along with those of Caroline Walker from 1812 to 1830, and Elizabeth Wadsworth from 1817 to 1829. [47] In 2020, Ann Walker's own journal [48] was discovered. Although brief, covering June 1834 to February 1835, it covers a pivotal period that weaves through the corresponding narratives in Lister's diary.
