A tiny, satchel-friendly Bluetooth speaker, this is easily one of the best we’ve tested at this meagre price point. It's hard to get it just right so I'll enjoy experimenting. If all you have to say on the subject of a tiny portable speaker is that it contains some leather on a forum thats set up for reviewing sound and the overall quality of an item then I'm afraid your opinion isn't worth noting. In terms of outright volume, the speaker gives a little ground to the larger Harman Kardon Citation 200 (p68), but is solid nevertheless. The presentation strikes a great balance between a room-filling spread and avoiding feeling diffuse and confused, and it's no less capable when pressed into service with TV material. The DALI is a slim flattened oval that contains a 21mm soft dome tweeter and an 89mm mid bass driver that has been designed to offer as long a throw as possible. Each driver gets its own 25 watt Class D amp to drive it which, both in the original Katch and here too, seems to be more than sufficient. Bass is always adequate and a lot more defined than with the Bose although the two preset EQ settings have lost the speaker one star, an option for a flat response would have been ideal, some music just didn’t work with either setting and so I had to mess around with EQ on phone.
The Cleer Scene, on the other hand, made the table where I was testing reverberate song after song as its 20W dual 48mm neodymium drivers and passive radiators pushed sound waves through the wood. I wasn’t testing for it, but it became clear that the Scene was shaking some molecules that the Katch G2 wasn’t connecting with. The Scene does not include a separate of tweets and woofers. The sound definitely has more “depth” to it, I would guess this is mainly due to the speakers facing both directions. This is great in indoor settings although the sound becomes a little lost when used outdoors. If you want more from the midrange and less from the treble, you can now tweak it thanks to a new EQ feature in the app, which adds significant value. For a nominal price hike over the launch price of the Flip 5, there’s certainly more detail here, too. What is actually the best sounding speaker though? You don't actually seem to compare them to each other? Such as the Dali Katch to say the UE Megablast, Audio Pro C3 etc. Ignoring hardwired speakers and price.
The design is a bit odd—the unique, narrow build makes it look like it's supposed to sit flat and fire audio upward, but that's not the case. Instead, the stylish speaker stands upright on four rubber feet. Pairing a Bluetooth speaker and Bluetooth device is easy: you simply put the speaker in 'pairing mode' (usually by pressing a button), go into a device's Bluetooth settings and 'scan' for available speakers and then select your speaker.
