This is just amazingly well told. Morpurgo retains the dramatic poetry of the original, the bite and strength of the narrative, and the Christian content. My kids are absolutely loving it, I feel almost as if they are reading the original. Planning has been adapted from several sources and fitted to the way in which English is taught in my school. There is no Week 4 planning, as this was assessment week, so it follows naturally onto Week 5. The following objectives are covered:

Overjoyed, Hrothgar showers Beowulf with gifts and treasure at a feast in his honor. Songs are sung in praise of Beowulf, and the celebration lasts late into the night. But another threat is approaching. Grendel’s mother, a swamp-hag who lives in a desolate lake, comes to Heorot seeking revenge for her son’s death. She murders Aeschere, one of Hrothgar’s most trusted advisers, before slinking away. To avenge Aeschere’s death, the company travels to the murky swamp, where Beowulf dives into the water and fights Grendel’s mother in her underwater lair. He kills her with a sword forged for a giant, then, finding Grendel’s corpse, decapitates it and brings the head as a prize to Hrothgar. The Danish countryside is now purged of its treacherous monsters. Comprehensive planning but it is hard to know which resources link to which lesson. A number of resources and video clips are mentioned that aren't linked or attached. I pointed out some of the interesting history, and the interpolated Christianity which didn't fit the original story - and we waded through the gore. They know about Beowulf, and that'll do for now.The story itself revolves around the Scandinavian warrior known as Beowulf and his deeds against three monster antagonists: Grendel; Grendel's mother, a sea-hag; and, finally, the death-dragon of the deep. All creatures of darkness! Beowulf is probably the most altruistic hero I've heard of. It's an heroic legend and major themes are honor, loyalty, bravery and glory. It's also bloody and dramatic. You can totally guess what's gonna happen but it's worthy and amazingly well told. Michael Morpurgo is not some random fella, it seems. Ever seen the movie "War Horse"? He wrote the novel.⠀ I adore this book because it is a very adventurous, scary book .It includes action, some violence and is historical. Some off the illustrations are still running around in my head. I would recommend this to boys age 10+ . I loved Beowulf it’s a great book – you would definitely like it ! Beowulf was a mighty hero who went on a quest to save Hereot {from gruesome villains} w hen he accidently found his match.Of all the kings that ever lived, they said, this was the gentlest and kindest to his people, the most gracious and famous the world had known. His life might be over, they said, but his name and his deeds would live on as long as his tale was told. Which is Why, All Michael Foreman is one of the world's leading illustrators. He has written and illustrated numerous children's books and won several major awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal, the Kurt Maschler Award, and the Bologna Graphics Prize.

I liked the book , it was so good – I want to read it again and again ! I could really imagine I was Beowulf , saving lives and protecting the inn ocent from ferocious monsters! Children LOVE the language and horror elements of this story and produce quality written outcomes as a result. Complemented by Michael Foreman's vivid illustrations, this epic tale is skillfully spun, with both the accessibility and the integrity it takes to capture a new audience. Lovers of superheroes and monsters, compassionate rulers and fearsome battles will find this retelling as enthralling as it is tragic. We just didn't enjoy the story. We read through it because it fits our history, but it's as gory as I remembered, and taken out of the Old English, there seemed less reason to read it together, anyway.
