AirFly is compatible with all Bluetooth wireless headphones. If your headphones can connect to your mobile phone using Bluetooth, then AirFly can connect to your headphones too. All brands are welcome - Sony, Bose, Beats and more! When it comes time to charge up AirFly Pro, you'll get a notification in the form of an amber blinking light. It'll flash three times to let you know its running low on juice. It comes with a charging cable (USB-A-to-USB-C) but the good news is it supports USB-C charging, so any one of the USB-C cables you have lying around will juice it up. Both the Airfly Pro and Airfly Duo will allow you to listen to a device through your wireless headphones without connecting via Bluetooth. The main difference between the two is that the Airfly Dro does not allow for audio input, but it does offer an extra four hours of battery life. AirFly Pro, according to Twelve South, also sports a hefty 16-hour battery life. I have not had the opportunity to max out the battery life to test these claims, but I can tell you that I wore out my AirPods Pro twice while AirFly Pro kept ongoing.
The second new feature that AirFly Pro has is called Receive mode. Flip the switch on the side of the AirFly Pro dongle and it becomes the receiver of the Bluetooth transmission. Pair it with your iPhone, and then plug it into an aux-in port (like the one you might find in a car), and suddenly, your phone is wirelessly connected to your car (or a rental car, or a friend's car). I'm a big fan of Bluetooth receivers in my house. I own a lot of older speakers that don't support Bluetooth. As long as you have a 3.5mm aux-in port (not the headphone port, that's aux-out), this will make your home sound system Bluetooth enabled. As you now know, Twelve South created the Airfly Pro so that consumers can enjoy listening to audio from devices that do not typically connect to wireless headphones. Once you have plugged it in, you will simply need to connect the Duo via Bluetooth to your wireless headphones of choice to enjoy listening to your favorite audio entertainment.
Pairing the AirFly with your favorite set of wireless headphones couldn’t be easier. After fully charging the device with the included charging cable, we were able to pair our set of AirPods Pro within 30 seconds with the push of a couple of buttons — one on the AirFly and one on the AirPods case. During our testing on a nearly completely full airplane, the AirFly had no difficulties producing sound without interfering with other Bluetooth headphones in the small space. It’s important to note that the Airfly Pro typically costs a little more, while the Airfly Duo can be found at a more affordable price. Audio sharing with AirFly Pro is amazing. I went ahead and tried listening to audio on my Switch using one earbud from two different headphones at the same time and there wasn't even any lag between them. It was as though I was listening through a single pair. I'm yet to try the AirFly on any further flights, but I'm confident some systems will pose irks and difficulties: a lot of older American Airlines (and other carriers) use a tri-connector, for example, for which you'll need an adaptor (or a lot of patience in getting the stereo 'band' to sit across the right section to achieve mono output to both ears).
What we particularly loved about the AirFly Duo is the fact that you can share audio with your travel partner. Because the device can be connected to two wireless Bluetooth devices at the same time, you and your travel partner can simultaneously watch the same movie in flight. Say goodbye to starting and pausing a film on your individual screens at the exact same time — the AirFly Duo ensures you stay in sync during your film or TV show. However, the Duo will only play through your headphones. And that the Duo offers four more hours of enjoyment as the battery will last twenty hours instead of the sixteen that the Pro provides. Final ThoughtsYou are now an Airfly expert, and it really is up to you to decide which device is the better option for you. I've become so accustomed to things just turning off when I stop using them (taking my AirPods Pro out of my ears, for example), that I regularly forget that some things actually need to be turned off manually. AirFly Pro doesn't ever turn off unless you press the button for about four seconds. If you leave it connected to your car and don't first turn it off, it says on, waiting for your return. If you don't return for 16 hours, I'm pretty sure your juice will be gone (though I didn't test the battery's performance for 16 hours). I also don't like it when gadgets don't provide battery level indicators. This is something Apple skips on, too, with its Smart Battery Case. On something as small as the AirFly Pro, it'd probably be very difficult to fit four LED status lights, but it'd be great to be able to press a button to see approximately how much battery life is left (based on how many lights light up). So, if you're on a plane and you and your traveling companion both have your favorite pair of wireless active noise-canceling headphones, but only one of you has an AirFly Pro, you can both still enjoy using your favorite headphones (though you both would have to watch the same movie).
They are both fantastic products and if you are like the majority of consumers, you will love having one of these devices handy for travel whether you use it for an airplane TV screen, tablet, or one of the many other appliances they connect to. Remember, the only real difference between these two devices is that the Pro offers an option to enjoy your entertainment through a speaker in your home, car, or even on a boat through the audio in option. The only downside we can find to the Airfly Pro is that it cannot be used on phone calls. So if you have it plugged into a car or speaker, you will need to remove the device before answering the phone. What is the Airfly Duo? I've used a number of Bluetooth headphone adapters designed for in-flight systems before, but the sheer simplicity of Twelve South's latest AirFly product has impressed me while up in the air. Twelve South has included a cap for the AirFly Pro that has a small key ring on it. I love this little addition because I can add it to my keychain and always have my AirFly Pro with me wherever I go. The only disadvantage to the Airfly Duo is that it does not come equipped with an audio in option. What I really love about Twelve South's Airfly, however, is just how darn easy it is to use. There's an on/off toggle on the side, next to which is a button to connect a nearby Bluetooth device. With my current best headphones sat atop my head - the Bose 700 being my current long-time winners - pairing was achieved in a matter of seconds (the headphones verbally telling me so).
