About this deal

I liked this story, but was confused by it. At some points, I understand the pacing and change in direction like the wind is ever changing. However, the point of the book is vague. Was it a story about hope or memories or roots (where you come from) or unseen connections to strangers? Or the price of freedom or justice or am I reading too much into this and there is no point to the story at all? This change will allow us to provide our members with new features and capabilities. It captured the sense of grief and loss, but still carries a flag of hope and determination.

Gill Lewis is the multi-award-winning and best-selling author of novels such as Sky Hawk, White Dolphin, and Scarlet Ibis and A Story Like the Wind is her lyrical and unforgettable response to the refugee crisis, which will linger on in the mind long after reading. Beautiful charcoal illustrations from Jo Weaver give this book a very special feel and make it a perfect gift. A very well-written work that painted a picture of the beauty of Africa and its people in a way I've never visualized before. The education of the young man in this coming of age story shows how time spent outside and alone complements and enhances a classical education and vice versa. The act of sleep is nothing if not an act of trust and are-commitment of one’s daytime self to the unfathomable depth of the urges that have raised life from clay." A Story Like the Wind is one of the best children's books I have read in ages, and it is a beautiful read for adult readers alike.A Story Like the Wind is utterly beautiful; the words and illustrations perfectly intertwining to create a celebration of love, life and hope" ( The Book Activist) He believed that when a person could form a question, it was a sign from life that the person was ready for a truthful answer." The three way chats, in which they are joined by other animals, about web spinning, themselves, other humans—are as often informative as amusing, and the whole tenor of appealing wit and pathos will make fine entertainment for reading aloud, too. A fictional story, written in 1972 by Laurens van der Post, who has courted controversy and been accused of embellishing his non-fiction works. No controversy here, as this appears to be pretty well bedded in fiction.

By Janelle B. Mathis, PhD, University of North Texas and Katie Loomis, Librarian and Doctoral Student, University of North Texas Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical MomentsIt was utterly impossible, therefore, young as he was, for him to think of death as the outrage which it is increasingly becoming in the view of metropolitan man, who keeps himself and his young as far as he can from witnessing death of any kind and so allows all the natural aids life has built into man for facing death to crumble by neglect and default." Focusing on a friendship between two young refugees, The Bone Sparrow is one of those rare, special books that will break your heart with its honesty and beauty - but is ultimately hopeful and uplifting.

Story Like The Wind by Gill Lewis | Goodreads

Janelle: This is perhaps one of the most powerful stories I have read that speaks to the significance of music and story. I appreciated that in between segments of the story that Rami was telling, different people in the boat related their story of memories, escape, loss and survival. The boy portrayed a strong sense of having agency through music and his instrument. He then shared this with the others as he opened spaces for their voices and nurtured a sense of hope through the story he told. The mixture of reality and fantasy is strategically used, and music makes that connection stronger and more vivid. I believe in music as a communicative form even without words, so the interplay here of authentic stories and an almost mythical tale about music’s origins creates a scenario that makes it easy to suspend disbelief. What comes naturally for this young adolescent is earnestly shared to support the stories of others, many of whom are adults. I am reminded of the universality of music and of the need for all to tell their stories – to be remembered. I am also reminded of the real struggles of immigrants – the price they pay both literally and in lives and dignity to find a safe place to live. the magic which life in primitive Africa seems to me to have possessed before we arrived from Europe to spoil it." On a boat drifting in the cold waters of the Mediterranean, dozens of Middle-Eastern refugees, young and old, cling to one another, waiting for the uncertainty that haunts their future to be put to rest.It is the story of a group of refugees huddled in a flimsy boat in the middle of the ocean, escaping persecution and how they are swept up into a folklore story told by one of them, accompanied by his violin. I really loved how this folklore tale about a spirited white stallion and that when the story returned to the present, the reader learned more about the lives of the refugees. A STORY LIKE THE WIND is an important look at refugees on a journey of hope, and a necessary, if gentle, call to understand how freedom for all people must be regained and maintained. Finally, the man-child had to become a man who, though he should never weep for himself, could weep easily for others. Gill Lewis weaves an unforgettable tale of displacement, hope, and the search for freedom" ( The Guardian) Lccn 2017289229 Ocr tesseract 5.0.0-alpha-20201231-10-g1236 Ocr_detected_lang en Ocr_detected_lang_conf 1.0000 Ocr_detected_script Latin Ocr_detected_script_conf 0.9053 Ocr_module_version 0.0.13 Ocr_parameters -l eng Old_pallet IA-WL-2000042 Openlibrary_edition
