About this deal

After preparing your teapot before first use, ongoing care of it is also an important part of your investment. There are many ways to care for and maintain your Zisha clay teapot; methods differ depending on where you travel in China. Unlike Western pottery-making techniques where “earth-clays” are turned on a wheel, the more rigid quality of Zisha clay enables the component parts of a teapot to be made in advance and then assembled piece by piece. There are 3 types of manufacture: Furthermore, because of Zini’s porous structure, it could greatly improve the taste of low-quality tea the common people drank in those times. Di Cao Qing (底槽清) It took me like 6 months to gather, validate and understand all the resources about traditional Yixing Zisha processing. However I think now I understand most of it. If you have questions or something you don’t understand then feel free to leave a comment.

Store in a dry place: after cleaning, let the teapot air dry completely before storing it in a dry place. Teapot is spiritual. The more nourishing, the more valuable and the more, flavored. If an original teapot is improperly used or nourished, its value will be greatly reduced. Yixing clay is not very malleable, and its low plasticity doesn't allow it to be wheel-thrown. So, when you look inside of a teapot and see circular lines or other traces of wheel-thrown pottery techniques - it's not a good sign. Yixing, also known as zisha, is a type of clay from Jiangsu province in China, commonly used to produce teaware such as: teapots, gaiwans, cups, mugs, tumblers and tea pets. Yixing zisha is written as 宜兴紫砂 in Chinese. The Chinese pin yin it’s written as: yíxìng zǐshā. How to pronounce Yixing? We think this is the closest we can get: ‘e-hsin’ What does Yixing/Zisha mean? Because most Qingshuini Zini teapots during the Factory era were light brown in color, people started to use the word to refer to teapots with similar texture and color to those Factory 1 teapots. This is what created the confusion that exists today.

How to choose a teapot?

I love purple clay for it has no color of glaze, just like that you can see one’s mind directly. One doesn’t rely on the appearance to show his nobility, and only that which is true in nature is most valuable and pleasing.” There are three things that make Yixing Zisha Pottery unique in the world. The Material, The Processing and the sophisticated way the teapots are made. Previously I wrote about the Main types of Raw ore which is used in Yixing Zisha (you can read it [HERE] ). The main and original material which was Traditionally used is Zini (You can read more about Zini [HERE] ), but the following processing method can be applied to other kinds of Zisha too, with the exception of Zhuni. I’ll explain each step in detail, but you can use this flow chart as a cheat sheet whenever you wonder about how Zisha Processing is done. Flowchart of Traditional Yixing Zisha Processing Style: Observing the style of the teapot can provide some indication of its age. Older Yixing teapots tend to have simpler, more traditional designs, while newer ones may have more intricate details. Moulded teapots are made by a mass-production process of assembling pre-moulded pieces by machine, such as the two halves of the teapot and lid and attaching a pre-moulded spout and handle. Even though moulded teapots are not as valuable as handmade or half-handmade teapots, many are made with Yixing clay and are still superior for tea-making than glazed or porcelain teapots. When clays are mixed, they are called Pingni. Natural Zisha clays are often mixed together to make traditional and new colours. Natural and artificial colours can be mixed or overlayed with each other in various designs. All too often however, a small quantity of Yixing earth-clay or even Zisha is added to a lower grade non-Yixing clay and the teapot is then sold as a “Yixing Teapot”. While technically correct, this can be mis-leading.

These natural properties means that Yixing Zisha Clay Teapots and even many cookery wares are naturally finished, without any glaze. The unglazed wares, with their natural porous characteristics mean that they benefit from regular use, absorbing some of the flavour & colour of the tea or food being prepared. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties the main source of Zhuni was Zhauzhuangshan and later Hongwei (红卫) Village Mine. There was really few Huanglongshan Zhuni teapots during this time, because Huanglongshan Zhuni comes from the deeper ore layers and therefore it was difficult to mine. However Huanglongshan Zhuni became more common during the 20th Century with the advancement of technology. The Zhuni at Huanglongshan has a smaller shrinkage ratio which allows it to be made into bigger teapots.Nature and Mythology Motifs: To beginning tea drinkers these tea pots are very appealing because they require little knowledge of tea to be appreciated. Often depicting common animals and mythology, these pots are delightful to look at.
