About this deal

Wasabi is more usually found growing alongside spring fed streams in the Japanese mountains. But a Dorset or Hampshire watercress farm, with its abundance of springs that are naturally rich in minerals and nutrients, is a pretty good alternative. Since being planted here a few years ago the wasabi has thrived, although in a fine English summer these shade-loving plants sometimes require some extra shade from a thoughtfully draped cloth. Freshly grated Dorset grown wasabi is combined with six other botanicals to create Twisted Nose Wasabi Vodka. Full of flavour and spice, it’s the perfect vodka to add extra punch to a Bloody Mary. Our Winchester Dry Gin™, launched on world gin day 2017 at the great hall in Winchester, is our tribute to our home city and was inspired by King Arthur's round table hanging in the hall.

The Hairy Bikers with Ally Thompson and Alex Nietosvuori at Hjem Restaurant (Image: BBC/South Shore Productions/Jon Boast) Twisted Nose Gin takes your senses on a journey into Hampshire’s fragrant green world of watercress, crystalline chalk streams and long summer days spent at the water’s edge. Describing fermenting food as the next "megatrend", Belle and Herbs make fermented foods using fresh fruit and vegetables, with their take on kimchi being used in the Bikers' pork and kimchi stew. Si and Dave made the spicy Korean cabbage dish with Pan and Sam, one of several products that they sell through their online shop. Though Si and Dave didn't manage to catch their own salmon, they bought one from the business and made a watercress-gin cured gravlax, with Alex Nietosvuori saying: "I love this kind of food, but it's hard to incorporate to an 18-course menu." Nevertheless, Michael Hindhaugh enjoyed hosting the Hairy Bikers, saying: "The two lads were great fun and they come across as down to earth on the TV programmes and that's exactly how they were."Nestled in the North Hampshire Downs near the quintessentially-English village of Bentley, the vineyards cover 12 acres of what were once hop fields. Dave Myers said: " A lot of the food was quite extravagant and I think we have to be realistic that it was 18 months ago and it shows what a different place we are economically in the country. I think we would have reined it in a bit with respect to the viewers." I first came to know Alresford when I was studying for my final accountancy exams in 1975/76. One afternoon I took time out to drive down and have a look at the start being made to reopen the line. I've pretty much been a volunteer ever since. As a family we moved here in 1990. Although it meant I had a long commute to work, every day was like going on holiday. And so in June 2015 the first bottle of Dorset Smugglers Vodka was released into the wild. It is the beer base that gives Smugglers Vodka a flavour quite different to anything else on the market. Cristophe describes it as “a true sipping vodka.”

In fact there is a story with every ingredient in this gin from the linden blossom familiar to ?ukasz as a tea and the inspiration of mulberry from a tree in a neighbour’s garden. Not only did Pothecary Gin win a double gold at the globally renowned San Francisco World Spirits Competition this year, it also won Drink Product of the Year at Dorset Magazine Food, Drink & Farming Awards. They have converted the field into a beautiful hop garden growing Prima Donna and the main barn is the epicentre of the brewing activities. Nestling at the western end of the South Downs Way, surrounded by the rolling Hampshire countryside, clear chalk streams and watercress beds for which the county is known, you will find Winchester Distillery, home of Twisted Nose Watercress Gin.Twisted Nose Gin is presented in a beautiful glinting, swirling, blue-green glass bottle. Twisted Nose invites you to taste with your eyes even before you’ve pulled the oak stopper to breathe in the fragrance as you pour the spirit. Favourite pub: " The Horse & Groom, a perfect location in the heart of Alresford and great for either a pint or a family meal. Plus, it has a courtyard for those warmer evenings." The result is an intense, fragrant and vibrant gin. We think it's the most refreshing gin we've ever tasted (but perhaps we're just a little biased). Smooth with a surprising depth of flavour Dorset Smugglers Vodka from the Bournemouth Brewing Company distillery is made by Cristophe Mathers. After studying chemistry Cristophe became a brewer making award-winning ales at the Bournemouth Brewery. The vodka was happenstance as Cristophe explains: “A home distiller came in to see us out of the blue and asked what we did with our ullage (waste beer) at which point I gave him some and he distilled it. Voila he had created beer vodka from our old beer – and so I thought maybe I’d give it go.”

Another thing I love about working with the fresh ingredients is that no batch is exactly the same. Talking to Ron at the salad farm he explained that the watercress he had just harvested was very young; the first crop. So it would have a lovely fresh vibrant taste but wouldn’t be as firey as the watercress harvested later in the season that has had time to mature. I just think that’s so interesting and wonderful. So no excuse saying you have a bottle of the gin in the cupboard – drink up and buy a new one each season for the full flavours! Hattingley Valley is a family-owned vineyard and winery in Lower Wield making traditional method sparkling wines from grapes grown on chalk soils. Emma moved to Alton after Hattingley Valley's owner, Simon Robinson, approached Emma and asked her to build him a winery. The winery was completed in 2010 in time to process the first harvest. A former software developer, Paul left behind his career and daily commute to London to pursue his love for gin and to become more involved in the local community. Despite living in Winchester for years, Paul felt like a visitor in his hometown and wanted that to change. To support and balance the watercress it’s carefully paired with nine other botanicals – including juniper, locally grown lavender and coriander from the South Downs – which is distilled slowly to maintain their fresh and delicate aromas.Local event: "The annual Watercress Festival - when the railway provides much of the transport into Alresford." Best gym: "I am a member of Energique Fitness in Alton. I have been going regularly for three years now and the team there are really encouraging. I like attending the numerous classes such as spin, Endurafit, kettlebells, yoga… It's a great mix so you don't get bored." The beers are light, refreshing and perfectly carbonated, delicious yet subtle flavours infused from their own hops makes Baynhams’ Beers great.
