About this deal

After over a month of struggling to finish a book, LJ Ross has yet again saved me with a BRAND NEW and completely different story. No DCI Ryan you say? What about Dr Gregory? Alas lads, apart from a VERY SUPER AMAZING but very super tiny cameo from one of our loved characters, The Cove introduces a whole brood of new people to learn about and - obviously - adore. There is a tension at the resort with relations between the hotel and the locals threatening to spill over into violence, also the awkward atmosphere between the families, could threaten the tranquilly of their break and their marriages. It's a decent story. Pretty good characters. Beautiful scenery. And I will read pretty much anything that's set in a bookshop by the coast. There were a few problems with this, which keeps it from getting a higher rating. In response to Coronavirus (COVID-19), additional safety and sanitation measures are in effect at this property.

I found myself lost on this beautiful island as I read this book. It was beautifully descriptive and I could almost feel the salt on my skin while reading. (I think I need a seaside break – I haven’t seen the ocean in ages.) I loved the twists along the way. and the character of chauncey, our "bad guy," is terrific. it's strange that this is the character who seems the most richly drawn and the most nuanced, because he is awful and smarmy and self-aggrandizing and one of those misguided true believers who, if there energy were harnessed towards ANY USEFUL GOAL AT ALL, would be a hero. instead, he is a german-hating pre-nazi, down to the symmetry of his uniform and his desire to burn the german-language books in the library. This story leaves a mark with characters that are lonely and modest, rich in kindness and deeply warm to others even though they face inequalities due to race, heritage and have been marked in a superstitious ways as cursed. A brother and a sister are two main characters that at times bring a tear in your eye for the happiest and the saddest of times they face in this WW1 period story. A luxury island resort is home to minimal staff, an abundance of jungle creatures, and, at least for a short while, its present set of guests who are invited to relax, unwind, and leave every facet of the outside world behind. I really enjoyed this first class thriller and recommend it especially to those sun-starved listeners like me who are craving all the pleasure of a fabulous holiday whodunnit which will keep you guessing right up until the last minute. In May 2021, Louise was shortlisted for the prestigious Crime Writers’ Association ‘Dagger in the Library’ award, which recognises an author’s entire body of work having been consistently enjoyed by library borrowers around the United Kingdom, and an author’s longstanding support of libraries. Chauncey Feith, an army recruiter whose family ties kept him out of the trenches, is trying to make a name for himself. Convincing himself that he is acting with patriotic zeal, he harasses the elderly German language professor at the college, and the librarian who has German poetry books on the shelves. Unquestioned xenophobia is the driving force behind Chauncey's actions.

The alchemic beauty of the story is largely communed through Rash's formidable powers of description. The cove area, where Laurel and Hank Shelton live, has a supernatural aura. It is evident that the cove's mystical power will impel events along a trenchant course of turmoil and danger. The tension mounts early, with subtle and bold implications of the cove's spectral qualities and the Shelton's cursed history, which are woven inextricably together. Two couples - Lou and Adam and Eliza and Noah - along with the children, intend to do just that but an unsettling air has settled over the resort and something is brewing behind the scenes that is threatening the tranquillity of their break and the longevity of their marriages.
