About this deal

The color of Melo Melo encompasses a range of hues from pale yellow to light tan to fiery orange. The most desired and valued Melo Melos are dark, intense orange in color. The color may fade with time, especially if exposed to direct sunlight. Just like other natural pearls, scallop pearls can exhibit various shapes, such as round, off-round, rain-drop shaped, baroque, or oval. Only one in every 10-20,000 shells produces a conch pearl, and less than 10% of them can be used in jewelry. Besides, since 1992, the queen conch has been on the list of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) agreement. All these factors together make conch pearls extremely rare as well as expensive. Did you know? It’s desired far beyond Hollywood or Washington, D.C., for the rich color and its gentle soothing quality on the eyes. Pink Pearls The most valuable natural pearls that have achieved phenomenal prices, apart from their historical significance, all possess extraordinary qualities that make them beautiful. Most of the time, you’ll only find them in museums or high-end auctions.

See the gem listings for freshwater pearls and saltwater pearls for information on pearl-producing mollusk species and natural and cultivation sources. Pearl Sizes Most commonly, the shape of an abalone pearl resembles that of a horn or shark tooth. However, occasionally symmetrical or round abalone can be found. Abalone pearls can be hollowed or solid. The finest abalone pearls have mirror-like luster, vibrant color, solid structure, and symmetrical shape. Faux or fake pearls are simulants. While cultured pearls are real pearls, simulants aren't pearls at all. With various surface treatments, materials such as glass, shell, and plastic can be made to imitate a pearl's luster. Faux pearls have been around for a long time. However, with cultured pearl prices at historic lows, there's little incentive to buy or wear imitations. Smooth pearls in the shape of orbs and ovals are usually created by bivalves, like mussels, in pearl farms. As with all gems, the less blemishes they have, the more valuable they are. The Melo Melo pearl

As with any colored pearl, you can achieve a more natural look by selecting pearls which are all of the same color, but differ slightly in tone or hue. Purple Pearls Now that we’ve sampled some of the different colors of pearls, let’s explore in more detail what it means that some pearls are treated with dyes or gamma rays to create various colors.

One thing you might not realise is that saltwater pearls like Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian are more likely to be round than freshwater pearls. Why? Because in saltwater pearls a round bead is inserted to encourage pearl to grow into a round shape whereas a piece of tissue is used in freshwater pearl cultivation. Now you can see - it is much rarer for a natural pearl to form a perfectly round shape than its cultured counterpart. Pink pearls range in hue from baby pink, hardly distinguishable from cream, to peach, to rose colored. They’re often loved for occasions when motherhood or extreme femininity is the effect desired. They also mean romance, loyalty, fidelity, and are often gifted more after years together than are white pearls, which are often gifted near the beginning of a relationship. Gold colored pearls occur in nature only in certain South Sea species. Various tones include yellow gold shades, greenish bronze, and champagne hues.Even well-dyed chocolate pearls can be expensive. It all depends on the quality of the treatment and the final result. An abalone pearl requires about 8 to 10 years to develop. However, most abalone snails are fished within the first four or five years of their life, and thus, they do not get enough time to form a pearl.

Look for blemishes in the dye (realize that even natural, untreated pearls aren’t perfect — they can show blemishes too, but you can usually see whether that’s in the pearl itself or the dye). The fluorescence of natural pearls may range from inert to strong light blue, yellowish, greenish, or pinkish in both longwave (LW) and shortwave (SW) ultraviolet light (UV). Cultured pearls may have no reaction or the same reaction as naturals in LW. Freshwater pearls always glow yellowish white in X-rays. Conch pearls are extremely rare and only produced naturally. It is produced by the queen conch mollusk that grows in the tropical water of the Caribbean. These large edible sea snails can be found off the coasts of the Bahamas and in the Gulf of Mexico. The process behind creating a real pearl is an intriguing one that involves certain mollusks coating an irritant in their shell with layers of nacre. The pearl forms as these nacre layers build up. As with any other gem, larger specimens are less common, hence they demand a higher price per weight. Round pearls may range in size from 2 to 9 mm. Baroque pearls may reach 50 mm.
