About this deal

The recipes I’m sharing are small batch (perfect for this year of smaller gatherings – each recipe makes 1-dozen or a few more smaller-sized treats) that are simple to prepare and that use everyday ingredients and equipment so hopefully you’ll be able to whip up any of these on a whim. Pimm, a farmer's son from Kent, became the owner of an oyster bar in the City of London, near the Bank of England. He offered the tonic (a gin-based drink containing a secret mixture of herbs and liqueurs) as an aid to digestion, serving it in a small tankard known as a "No. 1 Cup", hence its subsequent name. The new installations at its Herentals baking plant are expected to be operational early next year, and will transform it into a more modern, flexible and competitive factory. Seven Pimm's products have been produced throughout the brand's history, all fruit cups differing only in their alcoholic base. [16] Only Nos. 1, 6, and a 'Winter Cup' based on No. 3 remain in production. It was originally in 26 2⁄ 3 imperial oz. [757-ml] bottles, then made in standard metric 26.4 imperial oz. Lefèvre-Utile was founded in Nantes, in 1846 by Jean-Romain Lefèvre. [3] [5] Originally he sold biscuits from the English factory Huntley & Palmers and then he began his own production. The name comes from Lefèvre and his business partner and wife, Pauline-Isabelle Utile. [6] Their initials were first utilized by Alfons Mucha for an 1897 calendar ad for the "Lefèvre-Utile Biscuit Co." That same year the company hired Firmin Bouisset to create a poster ad. Bouisset, already noted for his work for the Menier Chocolate company, created Petit Écolier ("the Little Schoolboy") which incorporated the LU initials. Bouisset's poster was used extensively and the image was embossed on the company's Petit Beurre line of biscuits. Within a few years, the success of the logo resulted in the company becoming known as LU. [7] Davies, E. R. (2003). Lefèvre Utile, better known worldwide by the initials LU, is a French manufacturer brand of biscuits, emblematic of the city of Nantes. The brand is now part of US confectionery company Mondelēz International since 2012, after splitting of its previous owner Kraft Foods Inc., [3] which had acquired it as part of its acquisition from Groupe Danone in 2007. [4] The Petit-Beurre biscuit remains the flagship product alongside the Ladyfinger, Champagne, Petit four, Prince de LU, Pim's, Paille d'Or, etc. [ citation needed] History [ edit ] McVitie's launches limited edition Strawberry-flavoured Jaffa Cakes". Disclosure: I was compensated by Bonne Maman Canada for recipe development and for promoting their Intense spreads/ Advent Calendar. This post was not reviewed by the brand prior to publication and all opinions are my own. I initially baked the genoise sponge cakes and figured I’d layer the Orange Spread on top them coat them with the chocolate. But because the spreads are less “jelly” than other jams, this didn’t work as well as I wanted. So I froze the spread in small 1/2 tablespoon disks before I placed them on the genoise to help them hold their shape better.

The Irish Revenue Commissioners also regard Jaffa Cakes as cakes, since their moisture content is greater than 12%. As a result, they are charged the reduced rate of VAT (13.5% as of 2016 [update]). [24] Cover with another layer of plastic and pat the edges of each disk gently with your fingers to remove any air from around the spread. The court was adjudicated by Mr Donald Potter QC, who found in favour of McVitie's and ruled that whilst Jaffa Cakes had characteristics of both cakes and biscuits, the product should be considered a cake and not a biscuit, meaning that VAT is not paid on Jaffa Cakes in the United Kingdom. Crowe, Victoria (2016). "Why it might not always be worth paying for Pimm's". Good Housekeeping . Retrieved 10 September 2020. In the United Kingdom, value added tax is payable on chocolate-covered biscuits, but not on chocolate-covered cakes. [16] [17] McVities defended its classification of Jaffa Cakes as cakes at a VAT tribunal in 1991, against the ruling that Jaffa cakes were biscuits due to their size and shape, and the fact that they were often eaten in place of biscuits. [18] McVities insisted that the product was a cake, and produced a giant Jaffa Cake in court to illustrate its point. [18]
