About this deal

At the moment we are writing speeches from the Paw family members about why they should stay in the Contessa’s house and why they should leave. Most people in my class think that they should leave, the other ones think that they should stay because the Contessa might not have died.

And if want to know more about why it took me 7 years to write - here's something I wrote for kids about the writing process - it contains a comparison of an early draft of Phoenix with the final draft. I hope your students (and you!) will find it interesting. We used the Seven Ways of Jalal to create our own ways of learning and behaving – they are the Seven Ways of Year 4 (Aoi): Floating Hands, Bubble Focus, Shadow Walking, Connecting Minds, Sharing Opinions, Writing Awareness and Listening Time. The new book I'm writing right now is called TYGER and I do think it will be even better than Phoenix and the Varjak books, when it's ready. But I want it to be the very best book it can possibly be, so I'm going to keep going for as long as it takes. That's how I wrote the others, and it was always worth it in the end. I wrote a little bit about it here - please do look out for it one day! Also see SF Said's top 10 unlikely heroes being published this Thursday 16 July. We'll add the link when this article goes live. It's really interesting to hear that you're illustrating your writing. Blake did that too - he was one of the first to do it. I don't know if there's a book that explains how to do it - I know almost nothing about illustration, only writing! But I think it would be a great thing to do, as illustration always adds something to a story. So maybe it's worth asking an art teacher or artist about it? You may not like it at all, of course! It's probably dated quite badly - it was written in 1960. But it started a wave of really interesting books with a mythical/magical/otherworldly element - not just his own, but also books by writers like Susan Cooper (The Dark Is Rising sequence) and Ursula Le Guin (The Earthsea books) - who I think you might also enjoy... they were certainly big influences on me! I have always loved your books. My all time favourite is Phoenix because every sentence I read intruiges me and makes me want to read on and on forever. Both Varjak Paw books were just as spectacular because when something bad happened,it just made me petrified because of your fantastic use of empathy. Will there be any more Varjak books? If so,what would it be about? Although a second Phoenix book would be awesome,I think just the one is amazing. However,Varjak Paw could have more because at the end,it seems like there should be another;Phoenix might not need that. Also,I heard about a book TYGER. I sounds like it will be your best book yet, once it is completed. If your MILLIONS of fans and me read it,we will probably admire you and your work even more. I bet it definitely will be the best book ever! Thanks again for writing them. They are all super books and I admire all of them and I will continue to love them forever, especially Phoenix. Well done.

Look at the night sky on a clear night. Can you see any star constellations? Is the sky clear enough? Are any planets visible? Can you find out what they are? Here is a link which might be useful and this one too . See the links below to find out more about stars and galaxies. Write a poem The Guardian children's fiction prize longlist 2014 – in pictures". The Guardian. 28 June 2014. Retrieved 2015-01-21.This book explores themes such as power, fear and war in a way that would never be too overwhelming or complicated to a younger reader but it has the right level of depth and intrigue for older readers alike. In the sequel, The Outlaw Varjak Paw (2005), the domineering "white cat with one eye", Sally Bones, invades the territories of other cats and ruling them with torture and terror, and Varjak leads the other cats – and some dogs – in the fight against her. In 2020, Blue Peter asked the audience to vote for their all-time favourite Blue Peter Book Award-winner, and The Outlaw Varjak Paw was included in the top ten. And the more we've learned about the science of the universe, the more amazing it seems. I wanted to get all that into a book, so Phoenix is a book full of stars; it really does contain a whole galaxy.

He is heading on a journey filled with both excitement and hazard, where humans and strange aliens are both deadly enemies. He is searching for solutions to end this long-lasting conflict, helped by an unusual alien warrior girl. By working together, these two people must, even though they are from different species, find a way to help save the galaxy. Together, they can save the whole universe from danger! Will they succeed in this, or will the whole galaxy face a catastrophic war… forever? I put everything I know and everything I love into Phoenix, because I believe the books we read when we're young are the most important ones of all. They shape the way we see the world, and they stay with us forever. Maybe that's why it takes me so long to write each book! As I say, Phoenix took seven years, and possibly a lifetime. It was worth it though, because in the end, it's a book I really want to read myself. Thank you so much for your message! I'm really glad you enjoyed Varjak Paw - I hope you'll try my other books next next! Here are the answers to your questions:Varjak Paw won the 2003 Smarties Prize for Children's Literature. Translated into fourteen languages, Varjak became a play, a musical, and even an opera. The sequel, The Outlaw Varjak Paw, won the Blue Peter Book Award in 2007. Both books are beloved in classrooms across the UK. Our favourite characters were Cludge (14 votes) Varjak (4 votes), Holly (3 votes) and one for scary Sally Bones! It is so very definitely something; a text that dances with shadow and light and illustrations that pull and tease the words until something strange and alchemical happens to them. Oh man. I have read a lot of bad books lately, but at least I was able to get through them. Sadly, I couldn't get through this one.

At the risk of giving "spoilers" here, I wanted to alert parents and readers that this book has evidently jumped on the recent bandwagon of re-branding Satan (yes, literally The Devil) to make him appear sympathetic--heroic, even. (Never mind that it's also a bizarre and incongruent insertion that made a shoehorn fit into the rest of the sci-fi and astrological theme of the book at large.) Definitely! There will be a third Varjak Paw book one day; see here for more information on that! But I'm currently writing a fantasy story called TYGER that I think will be my best one yet... An exciting and involved space adventure which engages with big themes . . . Atmospheric illustrations are a bonus. Peters BooksLastly, all of the characters were extremely one-dimensional. I can't think of one character who had any depth to them. For example, Bixa, the female lead/love-interest was every bit the stereotypical "tough" female character oft used in middle-grade literature as of late. Her only defining characteristic is that she liked to "fight" and "beat people up". This gets tiring when mentioned for the infinite time in every scene. The romance between the two leads was forced into the narrative and felt unnecessary. It took me seven years to write this book, but really, it's been growing inside me for my whole life. I remember seeing the very first Star Wars film when it was released in 1977. It was a life-changing moment. As I looked up in awe at that first starship filling the screen, I remember thinking that I wanted to write a story as big as that one day. I wanted to write a book that contained an entire galaxy. I'm already working on my next book, but I can't say anything about it, because my books always change a lot in the years it takes me to write them!
