About this deal

The wall plaster in the areas shown will be replaced using a specialist rendering system. The premix waterproof rendering system is factory produced and consists of specially blended dried sands, cement, lime and aggregates along with polyproplyene fibres to reduce shrinkage. We’ve seen some fantastic examples of homes that have been given a contemporary twist by pairing lightly shaded walls with darker skirting boards. This helps to make the walls feel elongated and lighter in contrast, which has the added bonus of making the room appear brighter and airier. Of course, as with any other design choice, not all of these trends will be suited to every room or home. There are a range of factors to bear in mind when assessing whether a style of coloured skirting board will look good. Three variants of moisture resistant (MR) MDF: Left- MR MDF with no green dye added. Centre- MR MDF with green dye throughout. Right- MR MD with green dye running through the core of the material only. What is Moisture Resistant MDF?

To understand which colours work well together and create a cohesive look, you can use a colour wheel. A colour wheel is a tool which helps you understand how colours relate to each other (like a compass for colours). Versatility: Dark skirting boards can work well with a variety of wall colours, including soft neutrals, pastels, and even bolder shades. This versatility allows designers to create different moods and styles within a room. Skirting board colour ideas are important too — the Victorians used maroons and browns, grained to look like wood. These colours are not popular now, but a neutral white to contrast with coloured walls works well. If you’re eager to maintain a classically stylish look throughout the property, you’ll probably want to avoid any radical colour pops. Alternatively, if you’re seeking a more contemporary feel, you’ll have more freedom to mix and match styles and trends depending on what works best in each individual room. The wall plaster shall be removed from floor level up to that shown on the sketch plan (I included a picture of the plan on my response above). Dealing with mould issues caused by damp is a little more complicated because before you can select the correct remedy, you first need to find out where the damp is coming from. Because these products will be painted, it is much better for skirting board manufacturers to work with MDF that doesn’t contain a dye. Green MDF requires more work and primer to make sure the surface of the product is fit for painting, with no green colour bleeding through to the surface. In the past, people would think that grey skirting boards were grim, a bit sad and well...grey! However, people keen to bring elegance, a high-end look or even a zen vibe into their interiors are going all-in with this trend. If this seems a bit out there for you, think that there are many shades of grey to choose from, plus the dirt and dust on your boards would go easily unnoticed!

Do you believe the surveyor should have noted all these facts and proposed an alternative solution (like the ones you mention, reducing the external level and improving the drainage) rather than just going with the 'rising dampness' and proposing the treatment offered? I feel like I've been given a dud survey for works that were also going to fail.

FAQ

Alternatively, Steve Jenkins suggests using a paste made up from two parts baking soda to one part white vinegar. He recommends applying the paste to the mould and leaving it for around an hour. Height and Space: This combination can make a room feel taller. The dark skirting boards ground the space, while the light walls create an illusion of height, making the room appear more spacious and open. Traditionally, colour choices have been pretty limited, with everyone from professional designers to homeowners preferring glossy white skirting boards or – on rare occasions – natural wood colours.

Darker skirting candraw the eyedownwards, so if you have a lower ceiling and want to give the illusion of more space, paint it a lighter colour and contrast itwill a dark ceiling or darker walls so the eye levelremainshigh," adds Ann Marie Cousins. What Colour Should Skirting Boards Be? Nowadays the majority of cases of damp in period houses are caused by inappropriate building work that stops moisture escaping," explains surveyor and damp consultant David Kinsey. "With older solid walls it is advisable to remove incompatible modern materials such as cement render or mortar pointing that trap damp. Replace with traditional lime-based breathable materials that allow moisture to evaporate."

Colour Block: Use Colour Blocking For A Focal Point

Material is another factor. If the board is going to be painted, you could use low-cost MDF rather than timber. While tiles laid on a floor in a hallway or bathroom can be used as a skirting to give the impression of greater width by using the same material as the floor. There's a colour for every aesthetic and vibe, but choosing a colour for your interior style can be difficult. Choosing The Best Colour For Your Skirting Board Leaking pipes, inappropriate flooring materials and poor ventilation are all possible causes of mould on skirting boards and at the base of walls. (Image credit: Getty) How do I remove mould from skirting boards? Moisture resistance is not the same as waterproof. Moisture resistant MDF is not a fully waterproof material- it cannot be submerged in water or used in areas where it would get very wet, like outside in the rain for example. Alternatively, for a bolder aesthetic, go all out by choosing a skirting board colour that stands out intensely against your walls and/or floors. Create a striking contemporary look by twinning primary coloured skirting boards with walls and floors in shades of grey.
