About this deal

Helps keep your dog warm – If you have a dog with a short coat, such as an Italian greyhound, chihuahua, or another breed that often has issues staying warm in the cooler weather, a covered dog bed is a great choice.

The two large rectangles will form the top and bottom of the bed. Set one of these rectangles aside. Take the remaining rectangle and pin the piping in place along the outer edges, leaving a half-inch seam allowance. Baste the piping in place, and then remove your pins. Repeat with the other rectangle. The liner and cover are built with a soft fleece material, and can be removed from the bed for machine washing, making it easy to care for this dog bed. Uniquely, the polyester fill includes cedar fiber, which helps control odor and keeps insects away from the bed. Begin by printing out the dog bed pattern and enlarging it according to the size of your dog. Cut out the pieces, and then pin them to the fabric. Cut the number of pieces specified in the pattern.Proper size for your dog – You can’t just buy a large cave dog bed for a smaller dog. The whole purpose of a cave dog bed is for it to wrap around your dog and almost “hug” it, creating a cozy and comfortable, den-like area for your pup. If the bed is too big for them, this effect is ruined. Before you start shopping, highly recommend measuring your dog from the tip of its nose to the base of its tail, and measure its height when it’s sitting, too. This will help you choose the right bed for its needs. Position by pulling the fabric sideways from the seam so that the seam line is centred evenly from the point, forming a triangle. Ensure that it is flat and even. verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{

Cons: Too small for most non-toy breeds, requires regular reshaping, chewing-prone dogs may ingest polyester fill While your dog will love this soft and comfy bed, it can come in really handy for you. You will enjoy the convenience that this DIY dog bed sewing pattern will bring you. The towel will be easy to manage and wash away. You can roll it up and use it while traveling too. marthastewart 6. Cool and Cozy Pet Bed Pattern There is absolutely no end of joy involved where there are pets! They love you unconditionally and can bring a smile to your face any time of the day. Be it day or night, a rainy day, or a sunny day. When it comes to dogs, we all know that they love us SO much that the human race has finally confessed that we do not deserve dogs. We have rounded up some lovely and easy to sew 15 homemade dog bed patterns for keeping your pets happy! The best option is to try to transfer some familiar scents to the new dog bed. A brand-new dog bed will smell unfamiliar to your dog, which means it may not use it as much as you’d like. So you may want to consider placing a few T-shirts or other items of clothing that smell like you on the dog bed. Or, if your dog has a favorite blanket, you may want to place that in the dog bed.

How we tested

In addition, the included interior cushion is soft, fluffy and comfortable, and is reversible with a gray fabric side and a white, fleecy side. The interior is also fully lined and padded, and the entire bed can be machine washed, which makes it easy to clean and maintain. For each section on either side of the middle, you will not be able to lay the fabric flat to sew it to the bed as the flap will be longer than the bed section underneath. Measure twice on the flap to get the sections into 3 equal sections. For the example above, that would be approximately 4-½ inches. Sew to finish the exposed edges of your Velcro closure flaps (the open edges through which the filling is inserted). You can run the Velcro so that it encroaches on the area to be sewn and boxed (no need to waste more by going all the way to the edge). Alternatively, you can stop shorter for less use (and potentially easier sewing and boxing). There will still be plenty of hold with a small gap at each end. The difference can also be sewn, if you wish. As noted in our post on making custom window seat cushions, you can also part sew and add the Velcro later if you aren’t sure on sizing and want to test fit before committing to Velcro placement. Sewing the case: At the corners of the large rectangle, draw the side pieces up to create the sides of the bed. Pin them at the corners, and sew to secure.

Slip-proof bottom – You don’t want your dog moving its bed around throughout your home, so a slip-proof bottom is a great design feature, particularly if you have wood or tile floors, or another such smooth surface throughout your home. If you have a whippet, you already know how much they love to burrow under the warmth of covers. In fact, your whippet may have taken over your own bed! For the bottom section, measure to the middle of the fabric (in the example in #7 that would be 13-½ inches.Also available with orthopaedic foam bases, Cozy Caves are perfect for older dogs who need a little extra support and relief from pressure points.

Another option for making a bolster is to use a pool noodle and wrap batting around it. This will make the bolster a bit firmer which older dogs may enjoy more because of the support. How can I get my dog to start using its new bed? We’ve all been there. You buy a new dog bed for your pup – and they refuse to use it, preferring their old, worn-out, and smelly bed. What should you do? This makes a lot of sense when you think about it. If your dog is used to the confined, cozy environment of a crate – particularly if you cover the crate partially with a blanket or towel – it will feel more comfortable in a smaller, covered environment. First decide if you will be doing the bolster on all sides of the bed or some of them. Then measure the length of the bolster based on the sides they will be on, plus four inches. For example:A puppy, for example, may not respond well to having a dog bed in its crate if it is not yet properly crate-trained. If your dog is prone to chewing, it may tear the bed apart and ingest some of the material, which is not a good thing. If you will be using a bolster on more than one side of the bed, you will want to cut the batting so that each side will be a separate section. This will make it easier to fold at the corners when you sew them on. How do you know when to clean the bed? Well, just use your nose! It’s fine if the bed smells like your dog. But if it starts to smell a bit foul or ripe, it’s time for a wash. Don’t worry – your dog won’t mind. Sew Velcro to the unfinished side of the top closure flap, near the finished edge. The stitching will be externally visible, so use a threat that compliments the fabric, not the Velcro. Sewing Velcro can sometimes be a bit fiddly, so I personally prefer using the loop side on this exposed position as it is the easier sew and will have neater looking stitching on the outside.
