There’s space on the top for two pots, and a lift-off plate allows you to cook over an open flame. Air-flow is controlled by an adjustable front door opening and smoke is carried away up a long chimney. With everything set up and running properly, you can just go about cooking the food with all the ingredients you have. An ash pan catches loose ash and prevents it from clogging theairflow. It acts as a heat shield and prevents your stove from scorching the ground. Vent holes near the top of the burn chamber allow preheated oxygen to fuel the flame resulting in a more complete combustion and a hotter fire with less smoke. As an extension of our test, we placed a second pot of water with 2 ½ cups of water on the Versa. The burning charcoal was able to bring the second pot to a gentle boil in 19 minutes. The Versa simmered the water for an additional 15 minutes before cooling. Total burn time for the 15 briquettes in the Versa was 52 minutes. The combustion chamber and top door insulation is lined with a refractory metal to provide ultimate durability. Both the main combustion chamber door and the damper door (bottom door) have reinforced metal frames with hinges that serve to securely close the doors and regulate airflow. It’s a pleasure to get the Biolite out of its bag and see how well the stove fits together. The battery charging section fastens to the outside and is held in place as you fold down the tripod legs. The kettle-pot sits on top (there’s also a pot support included) and, when you’re grilling, the barbecue accessory fits over the stove and has two skinny fold-down legs to support it.

You can easily cook a meal by collecting twigs, pine cones, small branches, pine needles and other natural materials that are close to hand.
