Several of the activities have been organised and co-produced in partnership with Derby Museums and will take place at the new Museum of Making and the Museum and Art Gallery. These include a lantern workshops as part of Assemble: Derby’s Festival of Making on Saturday 23rd October and a ‘Stories of Diwali’ event as part of the Museum of Making’s new First Fridays late series on 5th November.As Japanese nightingales soar and sing, the façade of the Guildhall Theatre will come alive with the beauty and vibrancy of Toyota City. Golden maple leaves will blend with Obara Washi paper, shared histories of weaving and manufacturing will play out, and the exchange of music, culture, education, business and sport across 25 years will be revealed. This project is part-funded by the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and the displays at the Guildhall Theatre will be free to attend.

There’s so much going on in Derby this December and we can’t wait to welcome everyone into the city to enjoy the festive magic. Rangoli is the ancient Hindu artform which is a key part of Diwali (celebrated this year on November 4). and 79252 were taken into departmental use as staff messrooms, numbered 975013 and 975014. They were scrapped in 1978 and 1982 respectively. Through this theme of light, the festival will also celebrate city’s dazzling diversity and cohesion amongst local communities as well as honouring and paying tribute to the ongoing courage and dedication of NHS Staff and all key workers during the pandemic that have connected people through these most challenging of times. The performers will be joined by school pupils, community groups and members of the public donning traditional biodegradable Diwali and Chinese lanterns that they have made in workshops across the city organised by Surtal Arts as part of Derby Season of Light Festival. You’ll also have the chance to catch a preview of the main man himself, Father Christmas, who will feature in the parade alongside award-winning pantomime Dame, Morgan Brind, who will be taking a starring role this year in Aladdin at Derby Arena.
