About this deal

Don't automatically assume that any sign that does not meet these specifications is illegal as some signs have been given special authorisation from the DFT as experiments.

Amendments to the required thresholds, allowing wider use of the existing local facilities sign. This will enable more remote village services to be signed, where they would not have met the existing threshold. Will also allow electric vehicle charging facilities to be included on this sign. Town or village entrance sign * Permitting a second distance to be included in the existing parking area approach sign, Diagram 2501, allowing drivers to make more informed choice. Pedestrian zone –flashing lights Therefore, the introduction of the proposed amendment to TSRGD will not directly result in any increase in cost, but may lead to the installation of signs which cost local authorities more money to install and maintain, at their discretion. Sectors and Groups Affected The decision to install these lights and the costs to install, operate and maintain them, will all be the responsibility of the local authority. The proposed change to TSRGD will introduce the option to provide these signs, but will not impose them in any way, and the existing “fixed time” restriction sign will still be an available option. Are we nearly there yet? Sometimes, you just need a break from driving. When you’re bored, tired, hungry, or have passengers who are any/all of the above, you need to find the nearest service station. Thankfully, they’re well signposted on UK motorways, in the same distinctive blue as other motorway signs.

Motorway countdown markers

Fluorescence can also be particularly effective in drawing attention to signs mounted in deep shadow, e.g. below overhanging trees. The amendment will provide benefits in situations where the definition of the restricted zone is not well suited to fixed periods. For example, it will enable the zone restriction to be applied during school term times, but not during holidays. This has potential dual benefit of: A blue-coloured yards sign with white bars: These yards signs are seen when you are nearing the exit of a motorway or upon closing distance with a motorway junction. A couple of years ago Portsmouth City Council installed a 30mph gateway sign on a slip road. Unfortunately, the sign was placed a good 10m before the split, meaning it technically applied to the mainline too. While I knew what the speed limits were so was deliberately misreading it, it's easy to see how somebody on the mainline could be confused. Only in very exceptional circumstances, for example where there are severe visibility problems leading to the new speed limit would the Department consider authorising such signs. Even then we would insist that the circle encompassing the numerals be red like all other speed limit signs.

The introduction of the low emission zones will necessitate signing on the local road network, and also on the trunk road approaches. This is considered a necessary cost to ensure that the zones are apparent to drivers and give fair warning of the regulated access. Reducing sign clutter was a stated aim of the revision of TSRGD in 2016, and these amendments are not believed to compromise this. The purpose of this amendment is to enable road users to make better informed choices about where to stop. It may be considered most useful where the distance between successive parking places is significant. City boundary sign colour My second issue is that this type of sign does not seem to be mentioned in the highway code. I've searched the "Know Your Traffic Signs" booklet from the DoT but can find only:A green-coloured yards sign with white bars: These yards signs are seen when you are nearing the closure of a dual carriageway or upon closing distance with a junction. Brown rectangles are for tourist information. Always exciting when you’re on your way to a theme park and you see that brown rectangle telling you you’re nearly there! Blue rectangles are used to give information, except for on motorways where blue rectangles givedirections As a general rule, the Department does not authorise the use of count down markers with speed limit signs. This is because research has shown them to have little or no effect on vehicle speeds. The Department would much rather local authorities consider other, legal measures to ensure appropriate vehicle speeds. Permitting this symbol to be used on tourist information signs, for relevant attractions (as it currently is in England and Wales). Countdown markers to speed limits *

The signs you describe are not prescribed signs as set out in Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 (TSRGD) and would therefore need to be specially authorised. New symbol for use on direction signs, to indicate locations where motorhomes and campervans can be serviced (water, toilet etc). Amendments to existing signs Additional warning sign legends * A less garish way of increasing a sign's conspicuity is simply to provide a standard sign of larger size. not obscured by foliage or other obstructions, and is of the appropriate size and in good condtion. My first question is why? Most uses of countdowns like this are on higher speed roads and warn of a rapidly approaching deceleration lane or other hazard. That is certainly not the case here. This is a 30mph single carriageway road in a residential area and there are several turnings off the road before the roundabout is reached. What is special about the roundabout as a hazard here? Of course, dangerous drivers might drive at high speed along this road and be caught out by the roundabout, but that could apply to any hazard such as a t-junction or pedestrian crossing. You don't normally see countdown markers for those. This minor change to the regulations allows the next two laybys on a continuous route to be identified on the standard advance notification “P” parking sign. So for example rather than just identifying the next layby (“P” 1 mile), it will allow the next two to be identified (“P” 1 mile and 5 miles).

New signs incorporating countdown markers to identify a speed control area approaching. Particularly intended for use on approaches to towns and villages. Symbols for motorhome servicing Yards signs serve as countdown markers that will tell your distance to a particular point or area. These yards signs usually contain bars, and lesser bars mean a lesser distance from the motorway's exit or junction. These signs exist to allow you to prepare for what's ahead after the sign. For example, if a lane is closed, this is indicated with a red ‘X’ over the top of it. Or if a lower speed limit is temporarily required, the sign will display a number contained in a red ring. Not only will this be more noticeable than a smaller sign, but it will also improve legibility and hence reading distance, Rectangle signs are generally giving you information of some kind. Examples include parking restrictions, directions and bus lanes. Enabling pedestrian or pedestrian/cycle zones to be applied in situations where they would otherwise be unsuitable, and/or; The proposed reduction in threshold, to require a minimum of parking plus at least one of public toilets and/or fuel during normal shop opening hours will enable more towns and villages (particularly in remote rural areas) to be signed, at the discretion of the road authority. This will benefit road users by highlighting valuable facilities, with positive impacts for businesses within the communities which may be signed as a result. Having bashed my head against the wall trying to get Portsmouth City Council to understand how to use speed limit signs before, I wasn't going to bother. Instead one day I decided to tweet Hampshire Police, apologising for wasting their time with pedantry, but explaining that if I could spot the problem then a lawyer could too. Despite my informal choice of channel, the offending sign was gone two days later, with a reply thanking me.
