Tai/Harriet Smith: Tai, representative of the young, fair, and socially awkward Harriet Smith, is a newcomer to Bronson Alcott High School. Soon after, she is swept off her feet by both Cher and Dionne as they help her (unintentionally) become the most popular girl in school, to Cher's dismay. At the beginning of the film, Tai is attracted to Travis, a well-meaning, skateboard-riding, pot-smoking social recluse. Harriet is likewise attracted to humble farmer Robert Martin. Dan Hedaya, Mel: I didn’t audition for it. Scott Rudin was the producer, and I just was offered this job. I know I liked it. I especially liked the relationship [between Mel and Cher]. I’m an uncle to quite a number of nephews and nieces, and I don’t have my own children. But I’ve been close to children my whole life. I liked how it was written and how the character was written. The tough love. But while the cinematic makeover has gone through plenty of iterations over the years, in line with the broadening range of women’s stories on screen, what about men? The superhero genre is certainly full of makeovers: Steve Rogers' transformation in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) is an iconic moment. And in the past, male-led rom-coms like Can’t Buy Me Love (1987), Crazy, Stupid Love (2011) and Hitch (2005), have used the plot device – though the latter two films see makeovers orchestrated by men who also teach their male students to use misogynistic ways to manipulate women into either sleeping or falling in love with them. David Lascher took over the role of Josh from Paul Rudd in the television series, and the idea of having the character serve as a romantic interest for Cher was almost nonexistent in the TV storylines, while it was a major part of the plot of the film version. By the time the show moved to UPN, Josh was written out of the series entirely. Nothing can replace Brittany Murphy’s Tai in Clueless. Her role in the movie is so infectious and scene-stealing that it was one thing in particular that I missed in Emma. There’s something about her doe eyes seeming to scream her need for Cher’s friendship that fuels the movie forward. In Emma, Mia Goth’s Harriet Smith is the equivalent. She certainly looks up to Emma for advice on her budding love life and it makes for some entertaining moments. But once you realize she’s supposed to be Tai, you’ll just miss what she brought to her.
