Tai/Harriet Smith: Tai, representative of the young, fair, and socially awkward Harriet Smith, is a newcomer to Bronson Alcott High School. Soon after, she is swept off her feet by both Cher and Dionne as they help her (unintentionally) become the most popular girl in school, to Cher's dismay. At the beginning of the film, Tai is attracted to Travis, a well-meaning, skateboard-riding, pot-smoking social recluse. Harriet is likewise attracted to humble farmer Robert Martin. Each is pressured by Cher/Emma to reject her lower-status potential lover, instead being pushed towards Elton/Mr Elton. Disastrously for Cher, Tai then falls for Josh. Emma is likewise horrified when Harriet falls in love with Mr. Knightley. In both cases, this leads to the heroine examining her own true feelings. a b Spellings, Sarah (July 17, 2020). Clueless was filmed in California over a 40-day schedule. The film's director studied Beverly Hills high school students to understand how teenagers in the 1990s talked and learned some appropriate slang terms from them.

Mona May did the costume designing for the film. The iconic plaid set worn by Cher Hororwitz in the film was "a nod to a Catholic schoolgirl uniform, but taken to another level and, turned designer." [22] Cher wore several designer clothes ranging from Azzedine Alaïa to Anna Sui. [23] The "underwear" Calvin Klein dress worn by Cher was actually designed by Sui who, at the time, was an emerging designer. [23] Calvin Klein was credited due to more brand recognition during the time. What was your personal style going into the film? From what I’ve read it sounds like you had zero interest in fashion at the time, which is pretty ironic given the legacy of this character. Dan Hedaya, Mel: I didn’t audition for it. Scott Rudin was the producer, and I just was offered this job. I know I liked it. I especially liked the relationship [between Mel and Cher]. I’m an uncle to quite a number of nephews and nieces, and I don’t have my own children. But I’ve been close to children my whole life. I liked how it was written and how the character was written. The tough love. But while the cinematic makeover has gone through plenty of iterations over the years, in line with the broadening range of women’s stories on screen, what about men? The superhero genre is certainly full of makeovers: Steve Rogers' transformation in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) is an iconic moment. And in the past, male-led rom-coms like Can’t Buy Me Love (1987), Crazy, Stupid Love (2011) and Hitch (2005), have used the plot device – though the latter two films see makeovers orchestrated by men who also teach their male students to use misogynistic ways to manipulate women into either sleeping or falling in love with them. David Lascher took over the role of Josh from Paul Rudd in the television series, and the idea of having the character serve as a romantic interest for Cher was almost nonexistent in the TV storylines, while it was a major part of the plot of the film version. By the time the show moved to UPN, Josh was written out of the series entirely. Mr. Hall and Ms. Geist shared the same fate, and were also written out of the show by the time it switched networks.Clueless is a loose adaptation of Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma, and many of its characters have counterparts in the novel. Scenes depicting the fictional Bronson Alcott High School campus including the tennis courts, outdoor cafeteria, and the quad were filmed at Occidental College in Los Angeles. [19] Ulysses S. Grant High School in Valley Glen provided filming locations for the school's interior sets. [20] Other notable filming locations include the former Westside Pavilion shopping mall, Circus Liquor in North Hollywood, where Cher is mugged in her designer dress, and Rodeo Drive, featured in Cher's "crisis" scene as she dejectedly wanders around after a failed driver's test and a confrontation with Tai. Nothing can replace Brittany Murphy’s Tai in Clueless. Her role in the movie is so infectious and scene-stealing that it was one thing in particular that I missed in Emma. There’s something about her doe eyes seeming to scream her need for Cher’s friendship that fuels the movie forward. In Emma, Mia Goth’s Harriet Smith is the equivalent. She certainly looks up to Emma for advice on her budding love life and it makes for some entertaining moments. But once you realize she’s supposed to be Tai, you’ll just miss what she brought to her. Paul Rudd: After the table read we all went and got a bite to eat. We went to a place not far, around the corner, that I used to go to, which was kind of a bar. They probably should not have let some of those kids in. I do remember all of us sitting around saying, “How cool is it that we’re all going to do a movie about kids our own age?” And having that conversation about the John Hughes movies to our generation. It had been a while since there was one of [those]—“How cool would it be if this thing had legs?” Dawson, Brit (October 18, 2019). "The Clueless reboot will focus on Dionne". Dazed. Archived from the original on October 19, 2019 . Retrieved October 19, 2019. After receiving a poor grade, Cher decides to orchestrate a romance between two teachers at her school, Miss Geist and the hard-grading Mr. Hall, so that Hall will relax his standards and allow Cher to renegotiate the grade. After seeing their newfound happiness, Cher realizes that she enjoys doing good deeds. UPN cancelled the show after the third season ( 1998–1999), reportedly because of sharply declining viewership. By the final season, the show had retained only 30% of its original 1996 viewing audience.
