About this deal

Recent years have seen the old Governor’s Hall being used as a restaurant and function room, with other parts of the jail becoming a tourist attraction popular with those with an interest in the paranormal.

If you’d like to visit these haunted places in Cornwall, why not book a last minute break to Cornwall in October half term?

Photographs taken by the brave who go there in the depths of night have unexplained blurs appearing in solid immovable corridors, misty orbs of light appear all too often and confusing shadows in which it is easy to imagine human forms. Claiming to be in a relationship with a former soldier called James Westwood, Wadge and her two children hitched a lift with a local farmer to Launceston, allegedly to get to the rendezvous point. However, she was to return to the workhouse with only one child, her elder child, John. When confronted for the very first time with the Bodmin prison building, its seems that many know and admit they have been drawn here by some invisible, deeper force of nature At the exact stoke of eight in the morning, Selina Wadge was clearly heard to say, "God deliver me from this miserable world." And William Marwood, her executioner, mercifully released the bolt which plunged Selena Wadge eight feet into her eternity. Bodmin Jail was begun in the 1770's and was constructed by Napoleonic prisoners of war using 20,000 tons of granite quarried on Bodmin Moor. Chronic overcrowding led to its being extended several times in the 19th century, before it was finally closed in 1927.

Phantoms and ghostly spirits still seem to inhabit the decaying cells here in Bodmin Jail, adding to a desperate & almost threatening silence. A silence that still exudes every ounce of pain and forlorn hope of its long forgotten inmates. Gruesome exhibits include the Execution Pit which features a restored hanging ‘long drop’ platform. Bodmin Jail has inspired many ghost stories, attracted paranormal researchers, and ghost walk events are held for tourists there. Visitors can learn more about the inn’s colourful history in the museum or ‘sleep with the ghosts’ by staying overnight in the hotel. One of the most well-known ghosts of Bodmin Jail is the spirit of Matthew Weeks. He was executed in 1844 for the murder of his lover, Charlotte Dymond.Bodmin Gaol was designed by Sir John Call and built in 1779 by prisoners of war, and was operational for 150 years, in which it saw over 50 public hangings. It was the first British prison to hold prisoners in individual cells. [1]

Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name is set at the inn. It follows the character of Mary, an orphan sent to live with the landlord and lady of the inn, Mary’s uncle and aunt. On Thursday 15th August 1878 a sobbing Selina was led from the condemned cell of Bodmin Jail clutching a white handkerchief. It is believed that Mr Norway was followed and at an isolated spot on the Bodmin to Wadebridge road, just a little further down the lane from the Pencarrow estate, he was ambushed, bludgeoned to death & robbed. Initially claiming her boyfriend had taken her younger son, Harry, and drowned him in a well while threatening her and John, the crime was rumbled when her son told workhouse nurses that his mother had killed his brother and put him in a pit. That's without a doubt, as any visitor to Bodmin jail will attest to. While some crimes have reduced in severity for their consequences in the years that have since passed, such as arson, one crime that hasn’t is murdering a child. That’s exactly what Selina Wadge was executed for in 1877, becoming one of only four women to be hanged for murdering their child between 1868 and 1899. Tony believed the 'apparition' caught might be that of William Hampton, the last man to be hanged in the county.

Do the mathematics here then and it's obvious that this is a full twenty eight years after he retired from Bodmin jail where he obviously couldn't have died as suddenly as the story goes!

He said at the time he and his wife Bev made sure they were the only visitors in the attraction and they captured many 'supernatural' incidents including faint voices, strange electronic voice phenomena and light orbs flying around the rooms. With 55 executions taking place within the walls of Bodmin Jail, it’s little wonder that some have claimed that the walls are a hotbed for the paranormal. The paranormal tours include a ghost-hunting experience, where guests can use tools such as ouija boards to attempt to communicate with spirits.
