About this deal

When I heard that Sacha from Adelaide Hills Distillery was releasing a pink gin, I’ll admit my shoulders sagged a little. However, knowing Sacha’s ability to create show-stopping gins – (Green Ant gin was in my Top 10 of 2017) I hoped that I thought that this could be a pink gin I could get behind. Lemon and thyme have been vapour-infused to retain maximum flavour. The other botanicals, juniper, coriander, tonic beans, green cardamom, angelica, orris and cubeb are distilled all our together in the pot. The result is a bright, fresh gin and the team have nailed the summer gin brief! The verdict: This one was a favourite for one of our non-gin drinkers, who exclaimed “I love that!” the moment she tasted it with tonic.

While gin has a long history in places like The Netherlands and the United Kingdom, it’s made in all corners of the globe. While not often thought of historically as a gin destination, Australia has become a great country to be a gin drinker in the last decade or so with many craft and artisanal distilleries cranking out amazing, noteworthy gins. Add to that, Australia is starting to become known as a gin destination all over the world after capturing some of the biggest awards at the 2022 World Gin Awards. Rise of Gin in Australia Lemon Aspen, Lemon Myrtle and Meyer Lemon offset the savoury flavours and give it a punchy citrus hit. Cam and Suzy set up their distillery a couple of years ago and are already gaining attention for their whisky and gin. Tours and tastings by appointment only. No, but after being told, one of our tasters remarked: “I’ve never eaten a geranium, but I grow them, and I can kind of get it.” Strange Nature Barrel Aged-Gin is a limited release with only 1,200 bottles from a total production of 3,000 bottles available to the Australian market. It is available exclusively available via Lotte Duty Free in Melbourne, Brisbane and Darwin airports.

Gin is then infused with juniper berries (the main flavor mostly associated with the spirit) as well as other ingredients like orris root, Angelica root, licorice, coriander, lavender, orange peel, and countless other potential fruits, herbs, and botanicals. Where is Gin Made? This innovation extends to the production process itself. Australian distillers are not afraid to experiment, whether that means employing unusual distillation techniques, ageing gin in wine barrels for extra complexity, or crafting zero-waste spirits. The sustainability ethos that permeates much of Australian culture is mirrored in its gin production, with many distillers striving for practices that are as good for the planet as they are for the palate. In the most basic sense, gin is a neutral grain distilled spirit that is infused with juniper berries and various other herbs and botanicals, based on the individual recipe. While flavour profiles vary, you can bet it will be floral and piney. How is Gin Made?

Young Henrys Noble Cut, NSW

Patient Wolf’s latest offering for Summer has aromas of crushed thyme, lemon oregano, fresh juniper and white pepper. Sean: "In Australia we have always been a melting pot of culture and style. You can find it in food, sport, religion, architecture and now the spirits industry. We make whisky like the Scots, brandy like the French, Rum like the West Indies and Gin like the Poms. Within all of these various styles we bring our own creative interpretations, often dictated by our distance from traditional ingredients or the prosperity of local alternatives. No other spirit has seen that influence than the gin industry."
